Hi,
I'm new to BYC and new to chickens. I live in Chatham County, just outside of Pittsboro.
I've got a good number of chicks in my brooder now and am looking for 2 cockerels to add to the bunch.

It's cool to see so many other locals here. Nice to "meet" you all. :)

Great to meet you! I will be moving to be 10 minutes away from the Lee/ Chatham line on 15501 in June. Currently about a mile away from the Lee/Harnett county line so it will be a refreshing difference :)

DE is only a deterrent and not always successful.  Once you have an infestation you need something better.  I use 5% sevin dust.

I use diluted neem seed oil (50/50 with a carrier oil) on infestations with very good results. Great if you want to stay "all natural"
Just apply directly to the bird's skin, just a few drops every week until they are all gone. :)

This little guy had to pop his head out and say... HUMP DAY!!! LOL

You're not all that far from me! I'm on the Randolph/Chatham/Moore corner. :) I think I'm about 1/4 mile from Chatham and a mile or so from Moore.

It was like a chicken soap opera at my house last night. I lost two chickens yesterday, likely the neighbor's dog. The pair apparently hopped the fence and got attached by that a*hole Boxer that stalks the fence :( One was my last purebred Brahma I was trying to pull eggs from (my roo is also a Brahma).

I checked on the remaining girls and discovered another one has gone broody. Need to figure out if I want to add her to the chicken tractor with the other broody...she will be hatching hers this weekend. Checked on the one in the tractor and noticed a foul smell so now I'm not sure if those will hatch this weekend after all...I need to get under her and see what's up but had too much going on last night to do it then. Shew!

I am very sorry to hear about your girls. :(

If you'd like to suggest a dog trainer to the folks who own the a**hole Boxer next door, you are more than welcome to pass on my info! LOL

I'm so so sorry about your babies... I've got my little 4 week old chicks outsde in a dog pen...small one that folds so its not predator proof by anymeans. We don't usually have dogs around here but I have a huge fear of that//
