Quote: I'm sorry to see that you are in that hard spot. You don't have any real good choice's, but you can use bird netting over top of your runs.
Good luck with that dog and the pet owners.

Just to put the correct information out there........Just to put the correct information out there....
Dogs that chase and kill chickens are in PREY DRIVE - this is the natural desire to chase, catch, kill, and eat prey. Many modern dogs have a truncated prey drive that does not include eating, so if a dog gets your chickens it may just leave the bodies around.
It is quite unlikely that the Boxer that killed the two chicks felt that it was "protecting" anything. It was just being a dog. Doing what everything inside of it is telling it is supposed to be doing.
That said, it is possible to teach dogs not to chase or to kill chickens.
Anyway, I've gotta get to work on the hoop house so that it will be ready for this batch of young chicks. Predator proofing is one of my big concerns too.
I have a bitty box full of EE chicks but my OE's aren't laying or atleast not in the boxesAll my chicks have been picked up. And the people picking up all added a couple more to their request, so I have none of the EEs left for me! Well, except the three I picked out and had inside with my Golden Cuckoo Marans chicks. Time to set some more eggs! I want some more EEs and OEs! Empty brooder must be filled.
