Right now I have 3 wk old RIR. Looking to add a little diversity as well. I had one as a pet when I was a kid, now I'm raising for food and fun. I doubt it will ever happen, but my goal is to really become as self sufficient as possible

We don't have much land, but we've put all we have to work.
I have 1200 sq ft of garden this spring, trying to grow all our all our own food. (Even put a corn field in the front yard, not sure what the neighbors think of that, but called the city & they said it was okay).
For meat we've done chickens obviously, turkeys, quail, ducks. Our newest venture is meat rabbits, I don't know about that, we haven't processed any yet DH is responsible for all of that around here. Quail are my favorite for meat though.
There's a bunch of other threads on here from homesteading, living frugal, gardening, raising meat, processing day, etc. so there's an abundance of information.
Do you live somewhere where you plan to keep roosters? I don't keep them to try and not annoy the neighbors (and downplay how massively over the 10 bird ordinance I am), but I love hatching eggs. You can find a bunch of info on here about different breeds to, I like the really unique ones so that's what I try to hatch.
Are you always from NC?

Good morning everyone!
Haha peacock woke us up sounding like an airhorn. Maybe he's just starting to get his voice because I've never heard that type of a peacock sound before! Going to be HOT this week, have to get the gardening done early. I finally gave in and closed the windows to put on the AC.

Hypothetical Question-- If you could only have one type of chicken in your flock, what would it be? My husband asked me this this morning and I couldn't come up with 1 I was stuck at like 10. Just curious what others would say.

Good Morning! It's finals week here, and soon I will be free (somewhat) for the summer! WooHoo!

As far as goals...also providing as much of our food as possible. We raise our own chicken, quail, rabbit, lamb and beef. We have pears, apples, persimmons, mulberries, figs, blackberries, raspberries, grapes, kiwi, pecans and hazelnuts for permanent plantings, and I'll be adding to that this year. Also raise a good sized garden, although there are only two of us these days. We don't try to raise grain crops, however. On the other hand, we don't eat much of that. I wouldn't mind getting a grinder and finding a source for wheat berries, though. Another goal is to sell enough surplus to basically cover all our food costs, plus some for labor, and make our food free. We get closer every year. The pasture raised beef helps a lot!

We have recently filed and turned Hollow Oak Farm into Hollow Oak Farm, LLC. We are working on turning a hobby into a business. I narrowed down chicken breeds and will be working on breeding for SOP on all of them. That reminds me...dutchbunny, if I had to choose, I'd go with Orpingtons. I'd have every color possible, but it would be Orps.

Enjoy your day!
