I had the worst day today. I came home and rushed to feed the birds and unfortunately all the cages needed their water refilled and that's always a huge pain to do. Finally, I finished and remembered I had to collect the eggs from the nest box, cause i didn't want to leave them out in these temperatures.

I stuck my head into the coop and saw some black shapes inside the box, I had no idea what they were until my hand got close to the box that's when i heard a bunch of hissing. It was two snakes inside the box eating the eggs. At first I thought they were rattlesnakes, they sounded like it.

Long story short, one got away and I killed the older one. Then i had to clean the coop which made me late for an appointment with a client. i really need to clone myself or something so i can be everywhere at once.

Good Luck with the snakes. Sorry to hear they have found your nesting boxes, Im sure it will be back. It could have been worse though, maybe have been poisonous and bit you or the girls. I hear you on the cloning thing, I need two of me also. One to handle the chickens and one to work my regular job. I would settle for a 28 hour day too.

Good morning folks

We usually see a fair number of snakes as we are more
rural here with lots of wooded acres and very little development.
We usually have the black rat snakes with an occasional
red belly water snake but this year we have had two copperheads
already....the second one just yesterday.

It's worrisome that
copperheads have moved in because the grandbabies come
over nearly every day......hope that was the last copperhead
we see ere for many more years. Wonder why we are seeing
a change in the type of snake here.

hope everyone has a good day

I know chris of midguard reptile rescue is looking for red bellied water snakes aka red bellied mud snake as they are endangered and he's starting a breeding program ;)

I have yet to see a snake here (knock on wood), but I'm in town.
We have lots of hawks & possums though!
I don't know if it's the bird netting on the runs (though they free range all day) or adding the turkeys, but since we got turkey we haven't had any more hawk attacks I think she scares them off.
(You know now that I say this I'm going to lose birds to a snake and a hawk...)

I'm headed to Lowe's to get supplies for a tractor for some chicks. Hope everyone has a great day! Fingers crossed for some rain over the weekend!

I thought I would share baby pictures. I ordered some bantam bbs Ameracaunas, and since they were coming in today's mail, I wandered off and found some other babies to keep them company in the brooder. Only five of eight of the Ameracaunas made it, but I have 2 Polish, and a cochin, in the day old brooder (plus a week old mille fleur d'uccle) and three two week old cochins in another brooder. And I thought their cuteness would bring a smile to everyone's face. Of course, it just might be me. . .

Have a good night, everyone.

Not just you! No matter how many chickens someone has raised, chicks are always adorable!
