My hen (inadvertently I hope) smothered all the pipped chicks. This was my first time with a broody and her first attempt at hatching eggs so somewhere something went wrong.
She wouldn't move off them, they couldn't breathe.
When I checked on them they were all dead, beaks hanging open like they had been gasping for air.
I'm so devastated

They doesn't sound like a broody problem to be quite honest. Sounds like they got stuck. Possibly shrink wrapped and couldn't break out. Broodies are suppose to go into lockdown and being she has feathers they is always air available.

I am so sorry. It's always heartbreaking to lose chicks.

hello everyone! i finally found this thread! thank you 2Sesslers for posting about my hen. she is doing well and has ate and drank some. she is standing some but mostly resting. i've seen her put a little weight on the leg a couple times but the last several times i've went to check on her she hasn't had any weight on it. the leg also feels really warm compared to the other, is this something i should worry about?

Congratulations on your rescues!! I hope they continue to improve.

it's amazing what a tiny amount of care can do for a bird! Let alone a lot of loving care!
The Vaseline should work just fine. I personally use neem oil for things like that but with leg mites, pretty much any oil will work to smother them. Vaseline probably stays on better and longer than plant based oils.
Thanks! I'll look into neem oil too. It's amazing how much better they both looked just after a bath! Both are continuing to improve.
Wood ash mixed in for dust bathing. ...
Excellent advice. My chickens always have some wood ash for dust bathing and I haven't had any mite problems with them so far. The new girls have a box with some sand and ash for dust baths too.

Just had broodies hatch some chicks  last week and still have some on eggs. The outside temp doesn't seem to mess with the eggs being brooded.

I think it's actually helping. Came out this morning to a surprise keet and another just hatched. Original eggs got set May 8 and the first hatched out on day 27; June 4. Last one of that group hatched June 8.

I set new eggs (I've got like 10 broodies) on June 14 which should hatch on July 9. Now I'm feeling bad about having tossed some unhatched. Obviously, some of the new batch *had* to have started cooking before I set them, because I don't see any other viable explanation. Now I have to think about the four remaining eggs in the corner that haven't been sat on, but clearly could be developing. Oy....
