North Carolina

My hen (inadvertently I hope) smothered all the pipped chicks.  This was my first time with a broody and her first attempt at hatching eggs so somewhere something went wrong.
She wouldn't move off them, they couldn't breathe.
When I checked on them they were all dead, beaks hanging open like they had been gasping for air.
I'm so devastated  :hit

Oh no! I am so sorry! I am pretty sure my rambunctious adult guineas flattened 5 of the babies a few weeks ago. It's an awful feeling. :confused:g

Good morning folks

I usually wait another month or so to hatch for my
own needs and just winter over the chicks.........I know,
just the opposite of most other folks but I like having
fresh pullets in the spring. I am thinking I want to go ahead
and start hatching for my youngsters now instead of waiting.
Not sure why have this idea that it's good to get started. It's
not like I really know what I'm doing or anything.

Yep,....I've been waiting all this time to get my coop built...depending on others.....waiting...waiting.. HAD THE CHICKENS AFTER THE PROMISE OF A COOP so I didn't jump the gun...I counted on their word...should have don't it myself! Been keeping the chickens in 3 kennels...been telling everyone they were not predator proof. I put down stakes, kept everything covered at night, even had windows strapped against the panals that I thought were vulnerable.. This morning, I found basically nothing but feathers. One head.. a lot of bent panels, torn tarps, and 3 out of 9 chooks left...2 of them I know are roos........ Have been crying every since found them gone. I know the dogs or whatever will be back tonigh. Don't have anywhere else to put them! Feel like I've got them one a silver platter. Guess I will finish the coop myself and THEN try to get some more...

Oh, I'm soooo sorry! Many of us understand the heartbreak of a predator attack. It does sound like dogs. :(
