Eggs will probably get a little bigger, but if they are a decent size already, not much bigger. One of our hens has started laying. Nice, small to medium sized brown eggs. 1 per day since Sunday. I'm hoping my other girls aren't too far behind and we can have a nice celebration breakfast!!
Since I'm new to this...will the eggs get any larger, or is this the size she will lay?
I'm in Newport nc or carteret county. And yes I have a giant soft spot for silkies lol.TiaRC- where are you located? Would you be willing to trade for some silkie chicks ? My babies are from day old - 3/4 week old
Question for breeders:
What months do you typically hatch? I know many chickens "go on strike" during the colder months AND it's harder to keep chicks at adequate temperatures in the winter. So when do you usually do your first hatch of the year, and when do you do your last hatch?
(Seems like NC temps don't vary too much across the state, but if it helps any, I'm in the Piedmont/Triangle area)
I do my first hatches in incubators in March until August. Those are the chicks I sell. I do hatch in my incubators in the "off season" and brood in the garage if no hen is broody but I don't do any high volumes. Usually these chicks are to add to my flock or to raise to point of lay and sell in early spring.
I only give my broody hens eggs that I plan to raise past 6 weeks since I can't bear to break up a mother and her babies.
I'm interested to hear other people's techniques too.![]()
