Long time no post for me....been busy commuting and being a midwife for the last year.
Got some new birds from a friend who has to move without chickens, the 4 hens are barred rocks (maybe a mix, dunno), but they look positively moth eaten with scraggly dull feathers. Not sure if they are just mid molt or something else could be wrong. Normal poo, good appetites, normal behavior, at least one out of the 4 is laying.
Any suggestions, or just no worries?

I'd check for bugs and if none are found, it could be just that time of year (molt). Good luck with the new ladies and catching them babies.

I didn't see bugs when I caught them and brought home last week, but should I treat for mites just in case? Also, the previous owner had cedar shavings in the coop... I thought that was poisonous? What can it do the birds?

You can dust them just to make sure on the bugs. On the shavings, I read it causes breathing problems, but I don't know for sure. I just stay away from ceder shavings altogether. While the new ladies aint laying, you might want to think about worming them.

Good morning folks

We have hatched several replacement chicks a couple months
ago and we brood outside on the ground with heat lamps. They
all enjoy free range of the yard those first few months as they can
slip through most any wire. One of those chicks had decided that
it wants a mom so it attached itself to the turkey hen and her poults
and since it is a splash/white chick, it fit right in.....and it is a loud
noisy chick too. I wonder if it will try to gobble when it gets older.
It has earned the name Loudmouth.

With so many from NC, I'm in MD, I have been wanting to move near Blue Ridge Mtns. for awhile now. Any suggestions for a 49 yr old with 2 teenage sons. Someplace very safe, I'm like a momma hen with my boys, so much crime moving to what used to be a sleepy farm town here.

@thestix I've been in the peidmont of NC for 19 years and love it here!! it's a beautiful place to live!
