If you're going with a hatchery I'd say McMurray hatchery is my preferred.  I've gotten from Ideal and they're good too, but McMurray seems to produce prettier chickens with slightly better structure.  They're both good though.

There's this one in Wake Forest but I've never used them:  http://littlebirdiehatchery.com/

Love Little Birdie. Their feed is also really awesome.

Good morning all.

I hope everyone has a happy and safe new year.
I think it is going to be an unusual new year for me and my flock. Two of the girls have started laying again after a very long molt period. One of them is on a possible record breaking pace. One of my BRs has layed 15 eggs in 16 days????????? The other one a black sex link has layed two in 3 days which is normal for her. She lays about every other day.

And the unusual continues. I have 25 babies coming next Wednesday. What is unusual about that is that one month and one day after they arrive, I will be returning to the Philippines due to health problems with my wife's family. Her mother passed away the first of December and her father has had a stroke. A very tough time for the family. So I am enlisting the aid of my sister, brother, and best friend to take care of the babies. I have my doubts about their ability to care for the babies because neither of them know anything about taking care of baby chicks, especially with the cold weather we are about to have. All they know is that chickens lay eggs and you buy them in the grocery to eat. I hope the keeper of the stars looks down on the little ones and helps them make it through the cold winter. That's enough of my rambling on.

Happy New Year to all.

why not just sell the chicks and get more when you come back
There should be a sale at WCA Wednesday and Sunday.

I thought about that but, my brother and sister want to keep them. As far as coming back and getting more, I'm not sure I'll be coming back.
We have two houses in the Philippines and we are looking at selling them and buying a much larger place out in the country there where we can have our chickens along with some pigs and a very large garden. I came back a little over a year ago because I was diagnosed as having lung cancer. Which turned out to be a false alarm. After being checked here I am as healthy as a horse except for a little RA. Plus I love it in the Philippines. Beautiful country and wonderful people. Plus we live by the ocean so I can fish whenever I want.

Happy New Year

Will you be starting a chickens in the P I thread?
Scott
There is already one that is pretty much about the Philippines. One by Ozpat. But that being said, I will post from the Philippines. I already have chickens there. They are at this time all native Philippine chickens. Most Filipinos raise them for fighting. That's something I personally into. I raise them for their eggs and just to have some to fill that country boy void that exist when I'm there. We do raise from 30 to 50 broilers about every 5 months for food for all the extended family. Happy New Year.

I am jealous. I lived in Central America for eight years, and the climate is awesome. So are the orchids and the pitcher plants, and...and...and....

I spent the summer in Costa Rica about 15 years ago and really enjoyed it. It is very tropical like the Philippines and the variety of many different kinds of flowers is breath taking. Like the one
below and the many others around our house.

Yes, I raised orchids for years after returning to the US, just to keep that tropical feeling as long as possible! I don't raise them any longer, but I still have a handful around.

We must have about 10 different colors around the house. I don't know very much about them. One of them is getting a little different each year. The petals seem to be getting ruffled with each successive year???? The one thing I do know is that they are one of the most beautiful flowers I've ever seen.
