North Carolina

Here, it started off very briefly with snow then changed over to sleet. It would occasionally mix in some snow. We wound up with about 1 to 1 1/2 inches of sleet. There is just a little crust on top so I guess we got a little bit of freezing rain, too.

Loved the visit and so did the kids. They keep going on about the dogs.

Levi, Jake and Murphy LOVED the kids! (Reilly.. not so much. But that's alright) Levi says they can come visit any time!

Hope everyone is OK this morning. The ice is heavy. Between the time we got up and out and finished chores, three trees/large parts thereof came down. A good section of the hollow oak tree for which we are named, an already sick black locust, which is now on two fences and blocking two gates. Good thing the goats are gone! And a good chunk of pine on the side pasture fence. Again...good thing the goats are gone! 'Cause if they weren't gone...they'd be gone!

Hearing the cracks and crashes, plus more off the property, made me keep looking at the trees over my head and wondering how strong they were. The two hardwoods were already sick, and pine's are brittle anyway, but the silver maple and catalpa over the breeding pens were hanging mighty low. Hubby helped with chores this morning...which meant I had to keep back-tracking to get everything done, and then we had to corral a rooster he let out of a breeding pen. Help isn't always help. But it's all done, and we are inside.

I've already had several emails from students who live north and west of campus who won't be able to make it to class today. Power is out in places, trees are blocking roads. At 9:00 it was still 27 degrees here, so not thawing. Depending on conditions at 10:00, I may just cancel classes. I don't want my kids trying to drive in on ice on the back roads and wrecking. I'd feel horrible. I also don't want ME trying to drive in on icy back roads and wrecking! Hmmmm...I think my decision might be made already. But I will wait and see for sure.

Stay safe!

This morning just convinced me Global Warming has won out- NO CHICKENS FOR ME NEXT WINTER

Well, one of the neighbors is probably mad since he wasn't able to "drag strip" it out of his drive today like he always does. Was pretty amusing watching him try, only to just spin tires and go no where.

As some of you know, I have nearly a whole flock who prefer to be outside at night on top of their coops rather than IN them and it is a very rare thing to see all of them in the coops at one time. (They are in a secured run and I learned a long time ago that sometimes you won't change a chicken's preference of where they want to sleep.) Well, when I got home from working my half shift at the hospital last night at one in the morning, I had two sultans and one Augsburger who were still out despite the freezing rain.

Today when I went to collect my early eggs and put some fresh water out, about half of my chickens are still inside but the rest are enjoying the snow. I found it kind of funny, I even threw out some meal worms and the ones inside wouldn't even come out for them. More for the others.

Ive decided to sell 2 of my mille fleur leghorns ($20 ea.) if anyone is interested send me a pm, I will post some photos here tomorrow. I will also post an ad on craigslist on wednesday. I think they are all laying or at least 2 of the 4 are. They are almost bantam sized and lay a small white egg, the yolk is the same size as the bigger eggs so i guess they have less white.

Fayetteville/dunn/parkton/st. pauls/ hope mills areas I can meet you somewhere
