North Carolina

We had great weather today... Unfortunately, I had HORRIBLE luck with trying to get my pens done... I'm talking crazy, unfathomably horrible luck! (Long story to follow, feel free to quit reading at any time...)
My circular saw started sparking while cutting MDF, so I took it to my father-in-law (a jack-of-all-trades). He showed me how to clean out the armature/commutator. Took it home, and it started sparking again, then smoking, then died. My father-in-laws saw was battery powered with a bum battery, so I called a friend to borrow hers. She brought it over... More sparks! I take it apart to find two plates are *missing* off the armature! She says "no big deal, I'll just go buy a new one". She comes back and we try cutting some osb with it. More sparks!!! She takes it back to the store and the guy says it's common for those (Skil) saws to have issues. So she buys a Ryobi. Brings it back to my house, and we try cutting 5 mm plywood with it. More sparks!! One of the plates of the armature is hitting the brushes wrong, and looks like maybe it's shorted.... Needless to say, I have NO pictures of a finished product....
I'm not even sure how it's possible to go through FIVE circular saws in one day! Or how it is possible that two of them were defective straight out of the box....
I'm starting to think the universe is against me building more pens... Maybe I'm not meant to fall for chicken math....

Awesome! I've never been to a show before... what are they like? What's going on there? I'm assuming there are exhibitions and sales. Anything else? Thanks!

Inside the show hall you have all the exhibited birds in coops for judging.

Rows are roped off for judging one or 2 at a time. As a section is completely it is opened back up for visitors to look. No one is to mess with any birds that do not belong to them.

Outside you have sellers/exhibitors/dealers and a lot of discussion. This was just a very small section of what was there that year. Be careful of the dealers that show up. You will see too many birds in not enough cages. These are the people to avoid. No idea where the birds came from or what they may be carrying.

You can always tell the real breeders and bird lovers.

Pictures are from 2 years at the Winston-Salem spring show.

Wow Matt, thanks! Is there an admission fee? What about a seller's fee? Do people usually have just adult birds or also chicks and hatching eggs? I'm getting excited about going!

By the end of March you should find chicks, eggs, adults, and juveniles of varies qualties. That is, of course, depending on the weather. Since all sells are outside, rain can ruin the sellers area. Winston-S normally has a good amount for sale.

NO FEE to look around or sell. You need to have your green card(license to sell poultry) to sell. Even if you don't plan to buy anything, bring a box/carrier or 2 just in case. You never know what you might just have to have.

Another note about Winston is that the farmers market is the building next door. Sometimes it is full, but other times not so much. If you cake lady is in there still, the coconut cake is MINE. I have not been to Winston in 2 years, but plan to go this year. I am missing Salisbury this weekend because I am not 100% from being sick last week.

Oh, the restroom in the poultry building suck, but the farmers market restrooms are nice, clean, and heated.

Greensboro is nice, but pretty small. Not much outside for sale, but the food is better and they have a nice place to sit and talk that is separate from the show hall.

Good morning folks

I think those of you going to a show will enjoy it. I like talking to
the folks there because you can learn a lot about the breeds
and what they should look like.

hope everyone has a good day
