That's a great looking brooder and a good size. The hinged walls is a great idea too! I need something large enough that I don't have so many pens to water and feed and clean. I'd like to get them out of the garage soon too, maybe out to the barn. But I like going out there and talking to them and checking on them often so maybe the garage is the nursery from here on out. What do you use in the bottom of the brooder for bedding? I like the newspaper idea cause it doesn't get in their food.

Pine Shavings thus far, but I like the newspaper idea! The shavings do end up in the feeder and waterer...

I use contractors sand in my coop and brooder. Its the best thing I have found to keep smell down and to keep water spills in check. I dontvuse playbox sand cause it hold moisture to long, but white gritty sand drains well drys well and it covers the poop and drys out the poop so it just crumbles away. But just and idea.... Could you use sand paper? It would be good for grip but then it would get pricy replacing it all the time so maybe not. But I want go back to anything other the pavers sand.

My new heat plate came today! We're ready for chicks now! :) I'm interested to see how this one compares to my brinsea ecoglow.

Hello from Salisbury. Does anyone keep/breed/sell Welsummers or eggs? I'm looking for ones that lay real reddish eggs, reddish brown - mostly red. Or even ones that are a little reddish or copper. I'd like to get some soon!

Hey Fanniefarmer we are neighbors..............well sort of. I'm in Kannapolis. :) There's someone on the thread that has welsummer's hatching or already hatched. Not sure if they will lay the egg color you are after. Do you have chickens now? I have 3 easter eggers, 1 silver laced wynedottes, 3 silkies, and 2 silkie roosters. Love them all. One of my silkies is sitting on a few eggs now, hoping she'll hatch them. First time for me using a broody hen. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Flockofbantams beautiful chick. I have no idea what color silkie you have there, I've never had them that small, I've always gotten them at 6 months or older. Really interested in seeing what color it turns out to be. My silkie roo changed colors 5 different times while it was growing. I swear every day I went to see him he had more beautiful colors added and some gone. I'll have to take a more resent picture of him and post beside it one of him as a chick. Big difference.
