Alright guys I've been hit with a case of obsessive chick ordering disease. Those of you that have the same disease, how do you get rid of it?!? Lol anyway. I've ordered 2 cackle hatchery surprises and about to order a Meyer surprise. I'm crazy I know. It's the disease I can't help it. Now I'm hit with the challenge of what imma use for a brooder?!? I've always had my hens raise bitties. And the few I had to raise I could keep in a rabbit cage. Of course this time I'm expecting about 150 chicks. Any quick brooder ideas?! Help! Anyone?

Good morning y'all!

Can I share my dilemma with you guys? Well, I've had my coop done for 3 weeks now and I love it. Some of you probably know, I live in a development in Forsyth county and I'm restricted by ordinances to only have 6 hens. (If only I could go back 8 years. Oh, well....Live and learn, I guess) I was able to find two hens from a reliable, quality breeder in my area that I love. (1 black australorp and 1 light sussex) I want to have a variety in my flock so that my kids can really enjoy them as pets and for good egg laying. It is a lot harder than I thought it would be to find people willing to part with mature pullets or hens, which I totally understand. I wouldn't want to just sell my hens if I had put in all the work of hatching, feeding and raising them. The breeder I bought from only has black australorp still available.

Do any of you guys know where or know anyone willing to sell me a few quality hens that are around 12 weeks to a year old? I prefer large heritage breeds, but I'm open to anything really. Or do any of you guys live in or near my area and have some hens you would be willing to part with?

Thanks in advance for your help and advice! Hope you all have a great day!

I'm a SAHM working on turning our little patch of grass into a fully functional homestead. Currently only chickens and Nigerian Dwarfs, but hoping to expand eventually and add some Dexter cows and a horse or two.

DH is a commercial airline pilot so is conveniently not around much to interfere with critter purchases.

RN here as well, in the NICU specifically. I would love to have a litthe homestead but I don't see it happening soon. I'll settle for 3 dogs, 3 cats and 6 chickens...for now ;-)

Quote: I typically use some ungodly combo of large dog crates and cardboard boxes with a sideways metal horse trough just for fun and old window screens as lids. As they grow and need more space, I cut holes in the cardboard boxes and duck tape more to the side. It ends up as a sprawling chick-tropolis across the garage floor (much to hubby's delight

). But then when they move to the coop, you can just toss or compost or burn the boxes, based on your preferred trash removal method. I always seem to have free cardboard boxes and then I don't have to worry about storing brooders the rest of the time. Hope that helps!

What do I do when I'm not constructing chick-tropolises? I am a doctor of occupational therapy, specializing in pediatrics full time and then neuro-rehab PRN. Hubs is a aircraft mechanic and small plane pilot. Lots of fun and randomness around our house!!!

Looks like I better start looks for giant cardboard boxes!!

I recommend isolation in a cage where you can't sit in front of a computer until the broodiness passes XD
Visit pinterest, I've seen some great DIY brooders there.
You can also check with local appliance stores for some big boxes!

@Buckbeak01 I have some backyard blends that I'd be willing to part with but I'm in Bahama (northern Durham Co.). PM me for details if you get desperate enough to take a road trip :)
