North Carolina

Just went out to lock the coop and it just started sprinkling.

We got a whole day of outside chores in with nothing more than a cloudy day to complain about weather wise.

My back on the other hand,, not happy at all.
We must have been on the same schedule today! I too took advantage of the mild afternoon and for my run raked out and cleaned out my coop and worked on my compost.
Pass the ibuprophen please...

HI yall, I have a question. Last week I drove almost 2 hours to buy 2 cochin hens. When I got there to pick them up the seller had them in a crate in the back of his truck therefore I didn't see their living conditions. When I got them home I noticed that neither one of them scratch . My other chickens are constantly scratching and throwing dirt and pine straw all over but these 2 girls just walk around . Anyone have any idea why?

I picked up a 4x4x12 and planted it in the middle of our run in preparation for the 2" poultry netting my neighbor buddy gave me. My kid and I hauled an overfull 5x8 trailer load of rabbit compost from same neighbor but my back ran out of disk space before we could unload it.
I'm thinking inversion table and some jacuzzi action might just be the ticket for me if I wanna be able to move at all tomorrow.

They might have never had scratch and are likely a bit overwhelmed. Give them some time to adjust and figure out the pecking order.

I had 2 Cochins but am down to 1 after a bastard hawk got my favorite hen 2 weeks ago.. thus the poultry netting over the top of my run.

I went threw the same thing. A stupid hawk got my pretty little black cochin hen. It was heartbreaking. But thankfully he hasn't been back. I put up a fake owl and also ran some fishing line in.pie pans and hung them all around. So far so good

Pretty birds they look out of sorts. Give them time and some healthy treats. They'll settle in and be grateful soon enough.
...and since you don't know what their previous home life was like - maybe you better do a good look for lice or mites.

Yes that was the first day we got them. They are settling in very well now but still not scathing around like everybody else. Just makes me wonder if they were kept in some type of crate all their lives since they don't seem to know how to scratch .
