So, ice and snow are supposed to be coming to central NC this weekend.

What are you doing to prepare the chickens for it?

I'm planning on filling all my feeders and waterers as full as they'll hold to make sure things will be OK even if I can't safely get down the hill to the coop for a day.

I've got a wind block up on the open side so there should be no problems with drafts on the perch. They've also got an area where they could get into shelter on the floor if they wanted it.

I *want* to gather more pine straw for the floor but have injured my shoulder and don't know if I'll be able to do that this afternoon or tomorrow. If not, I'll ask DH to buy a bale of straw. I'd rather not, because the yard is covered in pinestraw that needs to be picked up anyway.

I have the larger screen 'windows' in the coop blocked with cardboard so they don't get too much wind coming through. The coop itself is small so the four of them keep it pretty toasty. If I get time I may clean out the bedding and put new stuff down but that's not a pressing issue. I've got a heater in their water tube so that's set, I'll refill everything tomorrow after work and again on Saturday if I can, but if I can't it's no big deal. The coop is literally outside my bedroom window so I don't have to go far to get to it even if there's ice on the ground .

Of all the days for the mower to fail to start!

Instead of half an hour with the lawnsweeper it took my son and I an hour and a half to get 5 gorilla carts of pine straw into the coop and a couple more into the run raking by hand.

I also rearranged some coop furniture and run clutter to make sure that they have shelters available if they want to go out -- assuming that I can make it down the hill to open the door. Tomorrow I'll be at work, but I'll have my son fill all the feeders and waterers clear full in case I can't get down to tend them on Sunday.

Anyone know anything about NPIP here in NC? I looked on the state Ag Extension website, but couldn't find the info there.

NC Dept of Ag is recommending that all poultry be kept in enclosed spaces/indoors until Feb 20th, by which time the migratory birds carrying the bird flu should be out of the area.
