I had ducks about 10 years ago. Had a pond, they were pretty much wild. So I consider this my real 1st time. I got the eggs spur of the moment, some guy was selling duck eggs for eating, I saw the sign as I was driving by. I saw all the runner duck running around his yard. He gave me six for free to try, since they were in the fridge. All hatched, 1 died that night. They are way too adorable for words, so I ordered some more from a BYCer, So not to interbreed. I am pretty sure I have 2 girls & 3 boys. So next hatch I will sex them right away and sell off the exrea boys. If they sell ok, I may hatch some out to sell. If not we will eat their eggs. I have some people that buy my chickens eggs weekly and they will try out the duck eggs. I will see how it all works out.

I have 8 acres and no near neighbors so I am not pressed for room. I do not have a pond but will buy some baby pools come spring. I do have a low spot out back that fills with water everytime it rains and it stays wet for a while, so I assume they will enjoy playing in the muddle puddle.

I also have some call duck eggs in the incubator, haven't candled yet. I have a bad feeling, they came through that dumb snowstorm and took an extra day.

I only have Muscovies all rescues from freezer or worse. I have 6 hens and 2 drakes which to muscovies is one drake too many, but he's here till he goes on.. then I have an Emden goose [gander] which my duck hatched so he has a little bit of an identity crisis, we have only 51/2 acres and most of it is straight up so just a small portion is fenced. I do want runners I'd really like a drake and hen but don't know yet how that will work these drakes I have are fighters, they have pretty much got a truce between themselves now but another male would probably be open season. An then My gander will fight anyone who messes with his momma lol.. It's just a zoo. But I am holding out hope that sometime in the late spring I can get a couple runners...

Did you know Muscovies are getting to be classed as vermin as there are so many of them? Where I lived in England before moving here, there were so many Muscovies that they had to catch and cull as ther were destroying other habitats, peoples property and so on.... And they were viscious!
