Pasty butt is normally caused by stress of some form. With shipped chicks it is obvious what the source of stress was. Alot of pasted poop and I will wash it off, but most times I just pull some fuzz off with the poop. The little bit of pain is quick and there is less likely of a chance of getting it back on that one. I have had a couple get really bad and I had to force "poop" them to get everything moving again. If you have ever seen the episode of "Dirty Jobs" where they "poop" the chicks before sexing, it is the same thing.

To help get a good Gut going and get rid of the problem I recommend adding some oatmeal/rolled oats to the diet. A couple cups in a blender to make a powder and then just mix with about 3 parts food and 1 part oats. Should stop the pasties in 1-2 days, not to mention give them a much better start.

Thank you Gavin for the feed suggestions. I read about potato peels but not onion, so thank you!! Is it true that you can boil them and then they're safe? (NOT that I would go to all that trouble for my peels...they'd go into the compost!!) What about other "peels" or "rinds"?? Squash, watermelon, etc...are those safe or not? Just curious!! I know iceberg lettuce is nutrition-less, but what about spinach or green leafy for a treat? We have TONS of lettuce in the house (and

Ran into a problem today. DH was super sweet

snuck out of work early to drill the holes in the concrete while there was still light out. I'm inside throwing diapers in the wash when this forlorn face is staring at me from outside. "We have a small problem sweetie"

What?? So apparently the 1" concrete hammer drill bit, the hammer drill and the 3/4" drill bit, etc...that I picked up today...didn't work out. The concrete slab was thought to be 2" thick instead it was over 4"...so the anchors they DH bought to secure the 2x4's to the concrete wouldn't work. Back to Lowes he goes!! Since my computer/internet is working SUPER slow today, I will edit later with a juicy photo for you all. Until then....have a great evening!!

Edited to post this:

everyone - it's been awhile since I posted

my new silkie "Tator" is doing good... the babies are growing well and I just sat 12x showgirl eggs and 12x mottled cochin eggs. << hoping these eggs pass my time until my call duck eggs arrived - they went on strike for the spring moulting (you would think they would know better than that

hoping for NO RAIN this weekend - so everyone can build and enjoy the NC warmer weather!!!!

Somehow my small setting of bantam eggs became 35. Did any know that you could get 35 bantam eggs in a Suro 20?

I think I need help or at least an intervention. I have sold a few birds in order to cut back and now this happens.

Edited to add:
The top ones are from my Faverolle girl and my mutts. The little ones are Dutch eggs and a few interesting mixes. Dutch eggs are white, but the colors didn't come out right in the picture.
