hehe.

Egg Update: nothing to update...I think my girls are boys in disguise or something. Only my Marans actually go in the nesting boxes and there are no secret spots behind doors for the girls to be stashing eggs IF they actually were laying.

Lol...on a wedding cake/ baking update... I have only managed to make 1/2 of a tier out of my 9 that I need to be done. I have a hard time justifying turning the oven on for an hour per cake layer!! I do have one wrapped up in the freezer waiting for a bit of cooler/less humid weather to level out and work on. Thankfully this massive project isn't due until September!! Instead, I have my steamer going and I am steaming the squash and sweet potatoes we picked up at the farmer's market. Today's specials are: Rice & Squash medley, Rice & Sweet Potatoes, Spaghetti & Squash, and finally just some finger sized Sweet potatoes. DD already ate one PINT of blueberries for breakfast this morning. I was thinking of freezing some of the blueberries but at the rate she is going...I might run out!!

At least it's healthy!! OOHH, the biggest news of all (only you moms & dads out there can understand the excitement here) DD who is 12mo old...she used the big girl potty today "all by herself" (okay, she signed to me, and I had to help her up and hold her there...but still, she recognized her need and that's good, right?!?)...I am hoping she continues with this interest! I'd love to retire the nappies for a while. Speaking of nappies...I'm off to do laundry!!

Have a great day everyone!!

Edited: First off, let me say that I think that insults apparently work. Secondly, as I know it is a BYC "tradition" I will PROUDLY post the following photo!!

Guess what I found in the coop this afternoon when I went to check on food/water & everyone!! Don't know who laid it...it's smaller than most of the eggs that I have received from other people, so I do not know...I just know it was NOT in the nesting box and was in the corner, so I can honestly say...since DH has been checking lately for me...I can't say WHEN this puppy was deposited.

Okay, I officially apologize to my girls for calling them useless boys!!

Ruthann!!! Congrats, I think it is Marans egg as the Orps lay brown..... But it is a start, keep in there!

It isnt a Maran Egg they are Dark Brown...it looks like a pale brown to me, but the counter top and maybe the flash makes it look lighter?

Well...I don't know who it is, but I have another egg (the size of a bantam egg) tonight!! G&A: it is a light brown egg, sorry about throwing you off with the counter-top...I didn't think of that. Oops!! We went from ZERO to TWO in just a matter of hours!!

Question: is there anything I need to do with the eggs aside from wash them with a little bit of soap & water? Once refrigerated, how long do "fresh" eggs last? Do I have to refrigerate them?? Sorry so many questions. You all are wonderful!!

Lunar - I currently have Orpingtons and Marans. My dream flock would include Jersey Giants, Cochins, Australorps, Brahmas and any other fluffy looking chicken!!

Yay for 2 eggs!! I wish my little orpington would show me where she is hiding her eggs...She layed her first last monday, and haven't been able to find one since. She is going to be penned up tomorrow, to see if she is even laying or if the first one was a fluke...

Ruthann, do not wash with soap and water!! You will wash off the "bloom" that a chickens coats on the eggs. Just gently wipe with a damp cloth to get the mess and poo off... The egg looked white in the pic, if it is light brown then definetly a Orp egg.... Eggs can be left unrefridgerated if wiped gently and have been told they will last about 3 weeks.... Ours never last that long, we sell a mix of the big and small eggs and have a waiting list for them!!

Anyways, the waiting has come, now don't expect eggs everyday at first and in this heat, they are very sporadic at first until they get in to a routine, but after that and it cools down you will get eggs daily!

Unless the egg is dirty there is no need to wash it. In fact it is best not to wash the bloom off the eggs.

Not washed and clean eggs are counter safe for 1-2 weeks in the summer in a NON-A/C house. Alot longer if you have A/C. Refrigerated are good for 8-10 weeks(not a typo). If you wash an egg put it in the Fridge since you just removed the bloom from the egg.

If you ever question the freshness of an egg just put it in water. Really fresh will lay almost flat on the bottom. The older they get the more the egg will stand. This is because the egg loses moisture and the air cell enlarges. If it lifts off the bottom then it is heading south. As the egg starts to break down gases are created. If it floats enough to break surface, CAREFULLY, dispose of it. A rotten egg is a wonderful smell.

Ruth soon you will have so many rolling in you won't know what to do and have more omlets then you'll ever eat! YUM!

Matt is right, don't actually wash the egg. Nature has it's only way of preserving them. I rarely refrigerate mine either. They bake up better at room temp anyways!
