What is everyone doing to prepare fir Irene and her untimely visit? I dint have chickens eight years ago when Isabel knocked, so I'm not sure exactly how to go about this! Now those nice shady trees that kept everyone cool this hot hot summer just look like death threats for my feathered critters! For a one or two, I'm comfortable just locking them in their coops with several days of food and water, but not sure what to do about a three or higher!

Well Good Morning Everyone!! I am happy to hear that all are well and safe after our earthquake. Here I thought when I left California as a babe, I left all the earthquakes behind me.

Would you believe DH and I were at the car shop getting our cars worked on when the lady ran out and asked us, "Did you just feel an earthquake"? We were rather confused and then she said, "Well darn, we missed it!"

So we managed to be sitting outside during an earthquake and never knew...to be honest, I like it that way. Now as for Irene...this is my first hurricane since Hurricane Charlie (or maybe Hugo...can't remember I was too little) hit Connecticut back some 20 years ago!! I don't remember anything aside from playing with my toys and pouting because I couldn't go outside to play!!

We're only 2 hours from the beach, so I am hoping with us living where we do, we'll just get wind and rain IF Irene hits. Anyone with actual experience know? Should we close up the coop or leave it open?

LOL if this was a tornado, I'd know what to do.

I lived in tornado central the past 10 years!!

Cat Update: I managed to pick up some kitten food and paste which I have been mixing together. She really seems to love it. Most of the time she is gone until midafternoon. I suspect she is either preparing her "nest" or she is out hunting. Either way, she returns just after lunchtime and curls up in the shade of the grill. I have fresh water and food out there for her for when she shows up. I wash my hands after each encounter with her JUST as a precaution. Today DH is picking up the "hospital" kit from the volunteer which should include a dewormer and flea/tick medicine, etc... Not sure how well the dewormer will work so long as she stays outside. I can picture her as an elderly companion animal. She LOVES attention, very affectionate and purrs up a storm. The purr box on that one is impressive....maybe its because it just resonates off of all those bones?!?

She's not putting on any weight that I can see, but at least she is getting proper nutrition!!

Chicken update: Jeremy does NOT, I repeat does NOT approve of me having a kitten following me around outside. The poor fellow gets his feathers all ruffled up and gathers the girls inside while he struts and flaps his wings outside (or wherever the cat may be near). I have started feeding her when I intend to go check on them so she stays on the deck. I don't want to stress them out!! At least we know that Jeremy is a good protector...while the others run and hide inside. Especially Timmy who still thinks he's a broody hen...

Ruthann - if you decide you don't want to keep her around I may have a home for her! My Grandma who lives in very rural Northeastern NC won't admit it but loves to have a cat around. She had one for years who passed away, and then a kitten showed up a few months later. She was excited to have another cat around, and we did get her fixed and all her shots after she stuck around a while, but then she was recently hit by a car.

I guess that's a big risk you take with outdoor cats. It's a little scary not knowing if they'll stick around or not, but I know all of us kids are eager for my Grandma to have a little company again! Let me know if you're interested. Otherwise, being in the country it does seem like they just show up one day so I'm sure she'll make another friend one of these days! And it sounds like you might be getting quite attached already!

As for the hurricane, I'm a little nervous about what to do with the chickens myself!!! Where you are, Ruthann, you do need to prepare for long lasting power outages. Even here a little further west we've had some major hurricane damage - power out for a week, lots of trees down, that sort of thing. Get gas and cash, bottle water, stock up on groceries - including ice in a big cooler!

Any other tips - especially chicken related ones? Oh, and my friend has a Carolina Coop and trying to figure out how to secure it to the ground in case of big time winds. Any suggestions???

www.carolinacoops.com - They're really pretty coops, premade and delivered, so it's just sitting on the ground. She said it took 10 big men to unload it and get it in position so certainly it's heavy, but she was worried with hurricane force winds if it would be secure enough???? I don't have a clue!

There is a cat at our shelter who has feline aids, I think the poor girl has been at the shelter almost 2 years now
