Home steder I'm sorry to hear of your loss. But, I wouldn't waste a good possum. Insted try par-boiling it, roll it in flour and frying it. If it's good enough to eat my eggs and chickens, it's good enough for me to eat! That goes for those deer in my asperagus plants too!

As usual this morning and yesterday morning I was out just after daylight to open the coops. However, yesterday's wind and cold and this morning's 15 degrees had me doing something I haven't done since 2003. I wore PANTS.

My normal shorts weren't going to cut it. Though those pants were replaced with shorts as soon as I got back to my bedroom. I still HATE pants, but at least my legs weren't stinging and burning as they warmed back up. I was also wearing boots. These are brand new and rated to -5. I got them because they have deep treads, are waterproof, and were cheap at $22. They burned me up, but I guess I have to learn to deal with it. I used to wearing tennis shoes or crocs all year long.

The birds seem to have made it through this cold snap fairly well. Now I have to reopen all the extra ventalation I closed up for the last 2-3 days. The work never ends when you are ruled my the feathered masters.

Thank you everyone for your kind words regarding Susan!! I made DH take care of her (after I stored her in a bag while waiting for him to come home) so I don't know where/if he buried her, I just know I left it in his court (of course I did mention all the wonderful suggestions you all made). He has decided that we will go buy a BB Gun/Pellet Gun this weekend while we wait for our gun license to clear and it will give me something to practice with that is not going to do damage to anything (largely).

Ultimately I think we will end up with at least 2 guns in the future (think his/hers)!! He wants a 12g and I don't want something that can blow a hole in my house (or one that I need to be cautious of the kickback!!) so I think 12g for him and a small rifle for me. Whether or not I could actually do anything, we'll see. I did get a scare this morning as there are wild boar in our woods, and they had made their way to our property line...they were close enough for me to see them (and at least one was HUGE). Yes with the cold weather moving in, we need something to protect us out here in the boonies.

At least if I managed to kill a wild pig DH and the neighbors could have a pig roast!!

Matt - I don't wear pants (but I am a girl, so that's a little different...hehe), so I do understand how this wonderful cold weather feels on the bare naked legs. I will say women get the benefit of tights which help a little bit, but...to be honest, I think you might look a little silly wearing them.

Henpecked - We didn't kill the opossum, but if we do, I will be sure to let you know and it will be ALL yours!

I have all do to eat what little meat I do eat...I think I will save that stuff for the more adventurous lot!!
