Glad you and your family had fun Mary. Hows the fishing there from the bank of the lake?

Great pictures everyone.

A cookout sounds great Hollowoak! Always love meeting new chicken people and their babies

!

Fishing from the bank is pretty good... but you can get into all the little nooks and hidden spots better on a boat. My mom once caught a 15 pound catfish on one of the fishing docks... it almost pulled her in.

WCA was short and sweet today. I bought some fluffy ducks... not sure what kind they are.
Hubby bought me a pair of Birchen Modern Game Bantams... they look so kool.
I also bought a pair of Crele Old English Game Bantams. Hubby bought a family of Fantail Pidgeons. (mom, dad & 2 babies) We also got 2 white silkie roosters & 2 claret game hens.
I will post some pics of my new babies tomorrow.

Good Morning !

I would wait til Tuesday if shes still sitting in there Tuesday - you can try keeping eggs under her. Test her tomorrow and see if she growls or brustles up, but I always test my first time broodies for 2-4 days before commiting to letting them have any eggs. Make sure you mark eggs you want her to sit on so you can still collect fresh eggs someone may lay in the nest.

Thank you for the suggestions!! How do you mark your eggs? Do you put the date or do you just make an "X" or something on the egg to identify it? Sorry so many questions. If she sits only for a few days and gets off...are those eggs "bad" and no suitable for consumption?
hu.gif

Now I get to test my fingers and see if I have any left IF she is broody...is that what you are telling me?? LOL. I will go out today and mark the eggs when I feed and let them out IF she is still sitting on them. If someone else lays in the nest and she sits on it, won't those also start to develop, if I don't get to them right away? I know that she can get on and off of them without hurting them...so how does that work? Look at me, I'm counting my chickens before they hatch!! LOL I may be bothering you all in the upcoming days with a plethora of questions, if she turns out to be broody!!

Of course this would happen right as I am about to have a chickie of my own...LOL

Use a pencil or marker.... write the date on them. You really don't want the eggs so staggered. .Check under her everyday or so and pull the unmarked eggs. The other hens may try to lay near her and she will steal the eggs. LOL
I check every day, pull the umarked eggs and they go in the fridge. If you are not sure...feed them back to your chickens.
She may not growl or puff up....remember these girls are really tame and docile. She will come of the nest to eat drink & poop.... this is normal.

I don't want to jinks myself but I have a pip on my first Exhibition Orp egg of the year. It's from Biggie and the Blue girl.

Heres a couple pictures of our little polish chick. Not sure if it is pure or a mix. Picked it up Friday along with our 2 leghorn chicks. 2 days old when we got it.

BHep - Thank you for the advice. If this doesn't work out...I might have to collect a few and wait for an empty slot in your incubator...

Hehe.

Just went to check on the chickens this morning and Olivia, my splash cochin and possible broody, came running to meet me. I did not stay long after I fed them to see if she went back on her "nest" of eggs, but there were 4 very HOT eggs in her box, which I marked and set back in there for her....just in case. There are 2 light brown eggs in there, 1 green and 1 dark brown.

Hoping and praying for a first time broody!!

Haha, DH finds this funny, as we were just asked by a few people from his work for eggs...he offered to "sell" them for a whole $1/dozen!! We're not in it for the money or to recoup money put in the chickens...just didn't want the eggs to go bad and his coworkers refused to accept them for nothing, so its as close to giving them away as we can. Although I did say if they don't bring the cartons back...we'll have to charge double so I can purchase some cartons!! LOL. IF this turns out to be a broody, more chickens = more eggs = more opportunities to share the wonderful goodness of farm fresh goodness with others!! I have already convinced my sister that she and her family need chickens (they are currently researching & building another barn to house them!!)...maybe we'll be able to convince some others too!! Then I can work on them with on ducks and then geese and perhaps an EMU or ten!! LOL okay, I promise not to go that far....for now!!

Marlow - Congrats on the new little one. He/she is a cutie!!

HT - CONGRATS!! GOOD LUCK!! I vote for BLUE...although to be honest, I don't know what I'm voting on (I don't know Biggie or his Blue girl or how genetics works in these cases either)!!
