. I just got done getting the green beans for a second time, last week being the first. One ice cream bucket over flowing, after the kids made dinner outta fresh green beans.

I think I killed my remaining chicks :hit my humidity keeps jumping to 90% and the temp drops to 96. The one that were pipped have stopped making noise. One chick seems very hot and wet. I think I messed up. When my 1st chicks were dry I took them out at the same time put the other eggs in the flat side of an egg carton so they would roll. Then I opened the bator without thinking to check one chick that seemed shrink wrapped. Now all is to quite :( did I kill them :hit

ANYWAY..............

Never did sit a "watch". Looked at the grass for a bit then got out the mower and cut most of the grass.

Kids are pruned and happy. their 1st day in the pool.

Ruthann: Guineas are wildish. You will need at least 12. No I am not trying to scare you. I started with 15 this spring, down to 8.

I hatched bunches. I need to re-stock and hope to set out 20-25 more in a few weeks. I have 9 acres... You know, pretty cleared, so no real hiding places. You have woods !!! You will need a minim of 12. You can start them in your coop or DH can add on...they do not need a run, just let them grow up free ranging. I will give you the nitty gritty... I can't find my nests, but I know someone that has Guineas..OOOOO Mary, may need eggs, I will let you know when I talk Ruthann into some.

Yes? Guinea eggs you say? Very do-able.... I wish I'd known sooner... I just posted a batch of 2 dozen on the Crazy 24 hour auction last night. Oh well... we can get a dozen gathered up this week... never fear... I have 3 guinea egg laying machines... and oh boy are these suckers fertile. I think we have hatched every one we have set.
I am already IN!! DH said he didn't care...anything to help keep the ticks off of our babies (even though they were only on me)!! I will say he did mention just how UGLY he thinks they are!

I am so glad we know people who know people (right Mary?!?) So my only concern is...I know that you mentioned that your guineas are "racist" and well...I do have a few chickens that your guineas might not like!! LOL

I will admit to reading about them on a blog a little today...I stopped after they suggested "training" your guineas on when to come and go (although I guess that WOULD aide in identifying where their nests are.) The coolest thing I read was that they tend to be monogomous and mate for life, like swans...

I thought that was cute. Just curious, why 12?? I have woods, but isn't that dangerous for them? I have coons, possums, wild boar, bobcats (I think), foxes and coyotes...won't these predators be lured towards us if we let them roost in the woods?!? Bah, I hate feeling like a noobie all over again!!

Hatch update: we are up to 10!! I will admit, I cannot tell the difference between a few of our chicks. I don't remember if I had black sex links (do they come in black? I know I have blue) but I looked up what BOE chicks look like and they resemble blue sex links, if I looked up the right thing!! If there are no such things as black sex links, then I have ALL of Toppy's eggs hatched out (YAY Alex, a 100% hatch)!! There are 5 eggs left in the coop that the girls are still sitting on, and we have 10 babies!! DD has been enjoying seeing the babies and DH has been so cute going outside and "checking" on them frequently!! Gavin, you are right...we are ADDICTED!! Although I have more boys than girls so far (out of the ones we actually KNOW of).

It's nice to know people... that know people.... you know?

Guineas are very ugly... and weird, too. But the best tick eaters in the world.

Went to flock swap today, just wanted some leads on some barred rock eggs. Silly me, I brought my 10yr old daughter.... Meet Penny and Rolo.

Cute chicks!

I just had to stop by and tell you how freakin' nice it is today!!! I only came in for a glass of tea and cool down from hauling compost to the garden. I just can't believe how wonderful it has been. Killing me I missed part of my day due to work.

BLAH!

It was a lovely day... I raked in the yard.... and fed grass to my chickens... and an occasional worm I raked up. They thought it was christmas.

Meredith, you may have, but how long was the temp low for? Remember chicks can survive for up to 48 hours on their egg sac that they ingest..... Keep fingers crossed.....

Go away for half a day and there are 42 posts! Geez.

Three bantams out, and one that pipped...and then it looks as if superglue had been poured liberally over the opening. Weird. None of the others that went in lockdown are doing a thing.

Long day and I'm tired. But Mom had a good 80th birthday party. All her kids, all but one grandchild (one of mine, natch), and many of her nieces and nephews from far afield came. AND I have finally found a sodium-free recipe for rye bread that she (and Daddy) like! Yay!! So now I'll do a bunch of baking before my next trip to Georgia, and they can freeze a bunch of it.

Still planning on WCA tomorrow. Might be sleep-walking, but I'll be there.

After six of my eggs hatched today I opened the bator and moved them to the brooder because they were knocking the other eggs around. I still had one to hatch after that, but I do still have two eggs that I have never heard a peep from. My humidity stayed around 75% though, but the temp dropped to 97.

We cleaned out the brooder box today, put fresh bedding down, made up a nest and moved the broody hen Hazel tonight. She was ticked at us for a little while but then settled onto her new nest. I candled the eggs again and I think most of them are developing right. Hoping for a decent hatch . :fl 21 days will be Thursday and Friday but I know it is possible for some to hatch early. I have a question though that DH brought up. How long do you let eggs go before you assume they will not be hatching?
