North Carolina

I hatched 8 Buff Orpington babies a week ago, they are growing and beautiful in the brood box. This same neighbor gave me 4 one day old chicks back in April. Theyendedup being 2 RIR /production red hens, a RIR roo and a EE roo. Neighbor says they are same age as these, butas I said mine are two times the size of these new ones. It is dark and I opened door and my chickens went in and straight to roost, guess I will see what happens in the morning

If you made them bonnets they could look like Miss Prissy from the Foghorn Leghorn cartoons!

How cute is that?!

My first predator strike this year - one of my Ameraucanas was killed by a snake - her head and neck were smushed and bloody, looks like the snake got her up to her shoulders, and killed her, and then let her go when it just couldn't do any more. SOOO infuriating....pretty sure this is the six-foot black snake we have debated about killing. We hated to kill it, especially since up til now it hadn't caused much problem, but I'm guessing this was that snake. My poor pretty girl.

Ohh... so sorry about your chicken... I hate snakes!

so sorry to hear about the loss to a snake.....
nature needs to eat too.....just sucks when it's
our babies.they snack on

we made it to Wheatland, Wy. last night but
the WiFi was down at the motel so wasn't able
to check in. We stopped to see a reptile park and
then Mt. Rushmore.......what a grand sight!!!!
We then had a lovely picnic lunch at a quiet
rest area next to a little clear water pond
the kids had a great time feeding some blue
gill in the pond.

Today we have stopped in Salt Lake City in Utah.
The countryside getting to here is spectacular.....
and we seen lots of wildlife along the way.
Tomorrow we hope to make it to Lake Tahoe.

Hope you all are having a good week.

Good Morning, Everyone!

Good to see SCB checking in. I'm loving reading the accounts of what you and RF are visiting. My trip is not nearly so great, although I am enjoying myself immensely. I'll be home Tuesday, though.

Hubby says all the chickens are fine, but he's brought those two weak-legged poults indoors again. I don't have a clue what's up with them. They act like meat birds that have gained too much and can't walk well. Ideas?

Well, all the chickens are alive, that is a big plus

The new ones won't come out of the house, they sit on roost, get off to eat and drink and back to roost. My older ones just got up and came out to the run like always. Just keep hoping for the best. The baby Buff Orpingtons are growing and so cute

. One seems to have developed this game where he runs out to the side of the brood box and cheeps and cheeps really fast like a distress call I step outside and say what's the matter babies and the others come out to see me and they all mill around like nothing. I told him he was gonna cry wolf once too many times. I am trying to handle them which they seem to enjoy. I put my hand in the box and one will come to me, I pick it up and snuggle it a bit and put it back to find another one waiting it's turn. They each get a turn at being snuggled a few times a day. They are so sweet.
Just got to figure out what I'm gonna do with all these chickens. They do seem to be multiplying

Went from 4 to 12 to 15! Tractor will only hold 8 at the most, and I know hubby will not build another tractor.

Hope everyone has a great day!

So we just got 6 mixed breed eggs for our new broody to set on. We are thinking of putting her in a large dog crate to brood till hatch day gets close then move her to our broody box. We thought of just putting her in the broody box from the start but our other broody who has a 2 week old chick now still used the broody box to roost in with her chick at night. So for those who use a dog crate for a broody do you let her out daily or just leave food and water in there with her. I believe she will have room to roam around in there when she needs to get off the nest. Do any of you use a dog crate for broodies? If so how do you handle it?
