what kind of breeds do they have? all kinds? lots of day old? etc....

WCA has a little of everything, depends on what people bring. Chicks, teens, adults, ducks, goat , pigs...basically any small animal or hatching eggs.

Where are you ? There is the Carolina Chicken Stock coming up in Sept. (I think) In Lincolnton. There are a bunch of Westeners on this thread, I am sure someone can head you in the right direction.

Good Morning Everyone!

Hubby and I (mostly him!) lined that grow-out pen with chicken wire this morning, He also found the gap where the youngsters were getting through to under the barn. That's closed up now. I also got the youngest chicks out of a cage into Juvenile Detention. They were appalled at all that space! All 8 x 8 feet!

These will be the last cage-raised batch of chicks for me. I did them this way this summer, and had the worst "success" rate ever. I've never lost so many chicks. So, back on the ground they go, from day 1. And as soon as they feather out, they'll be allowed out to day range. That has always been a successful method for me, aside from the occassional loss to a chick getting into the sheep water and drowning. But with them confined I've had slow growth and unthrifty birds. Must be some nutrient they are missing that they can get from the grass or soil or insects that's not in the feed. Or Something! Whatever. I'm going back to what has worked best for me.

Hubby is out picking grapes, which I've got to juice today. I've already got several gallons of juice done. This should more than double what I've already put up. Plenty for him for a year, I think. And it won't be long before the pears are ready. Then the pecans and hazelnuts. Yummy.

Have a great day, Everyone! Welcome to all the new folk!

I heard there is a livestock auction in Waynesville every Saturday morn that usually has chickens, but I have never been. What part of the Western part of the state are you in. I am in the far west and we have nothing. Think there was an ChickenStock in Hayesville back in May, but that is a fur piece for me also.
The joys of country living!

Question... my RIR pullets are starting to lay but they don't get the concept of the nest box. Both of them lay in the same corner of the coop every day. But then one of them gets up into the nesting box and sits there for about an hour, before leaving to join her sisters. I know she is one of the ones laying so any ideas why she's hopping up into the nest box? Also, tips and tricks to get them to lay inthe box? I've gotten 1 egg up there out of 15.

ETA: Today is the first day I have gotten 3 eggs out of my three girls!! One was actually in the nesting box. I suppose she just had to practice laying it there for a few days before she could actually do it. Now I just wish I could tell which egg came from which girl... I need a game cam for christmas... :p
