Now If I can figure out how to teach them to use the nesting boxes...I have a golf ball, wooden eggs, and porcelain eggs, and still the sand out in the run under the water was more appealing....

Can't wait to crack this sucker open and have breakfast....with the help of 2 store bought eggs (FOR NOW!)

Hey congratulations! I was so excited when we got our first egg I had to call everyone I knew and tell them about it! Luckily, my friends are used to me so they agreed that my chickens were amazing and went back to their regularly scheduled lives. LOL

We skipped the part where the chickens lay everywhere but the laying box...and I'm not sure how?

We knew it was about time for the girls to start laying, and I kept thinking I needed to get a couple of golf balls, but I hadn't gotten around to it. Then suddenly, there was an egg in the box! A week or so later we started finding two eggs in the boxes. Now we typically get anywhere from 4 (on a slow day) to 6 eggs a day, laid in two boxes. A pretty batch of light brown, pinkish, dark brown, and green/blue. I don't know how our girls figured out the boxes were where they should lay their eggs, but I'm definitely not looking a gift chicken in the beak!

Good Morning, Everyone!

I logged in at home this morning, but then forgot to post! Must be getting old. It's a lovely day with no rain yet. Hubby let the girls out this morning, so I didn't have to do the chickenhouse in the dark. He's such a keeper.

My silly toe is healing fast (I almost always heal rapidly) and I think I'll be back in my own shoes by this weekend. That'll be nice. I've hurt myself three weekends in a row, though, slicing through the back of my fingernail one weekend, getting a bad steam burn the next, and now the toe. I told Hubby I'm staying in bed all this next one! He said he'll bring be food and drinks and keep me in knitting. I had been joking, but if he's going to do all that I just might do it!

Have a great day everyone! Keep those eggs coming!

Thank you, I do want them to have chicks one day, I didn't know if anyone would take the hens for a week or two and split the eggs with me or not. Borrowing a rooster would be out of the question, my neighbors would go ballistic.

We sacrificed the first egg... We marked the date on it and put it in the nest. It worked better than the fake ones. I don't put the hens in the nesting boxes in the big house because of the height. Last year I bought a hen at an auction and we thought it was a good idea to put her in the box, and when my hubby went out to feed the girls she startled and flew into the wall near the open doors. SHE MISSED!

This may have been an isolated incident, but now they just follow the other hens, and as they start laying we find a few in odd places, like the floor, or sand outside of house. Much better than it was a few years back. It was an Easter egg hunt every day in the area that they hung out in the woods, and around the porch in a flower pot.

I don't have a rooster like that hen, but did see some at the auction. I would be willing to put them in the conjugal visit house if I had the male. sorry

NCnarrator: I did the same thing when we had our first eggs, and chicks too... I even put videos on the FB page for my classmates. I don't do it as much anymore, but still if it is something new!!!

Hopefully they take me as I am, and are good with it.

Good luck with the eggs Zack... I'm sure she will take to the nest with a little time. My birds just knocked the fake eggs out of the nest when scratching in it. Maybe she should scratch in it a bit?

It's official...I seem to ONLY hatch boys!! A special thanks to DoubleA (aka Alex) for stopping by today for some fun times but BOOOOOOOO for pointing out that 4/6 of my younger chicks are ROOSTERS! I had hoped it was the other way around!! Also...learned what "poopy butt" was and how to take care of it as #7 was saved by Alex as well!!

Now if I could only get the builders to show up when they say they will AND get all the other buildings built, I'd be all set. At least it gives DH something to look forward to!!
