Northeast Georgia girl who could use some advice

Glad to meet you, Lila Jean, and welcome to BYC. I am so sorry for your losses and difficulties! :hugs

Your chickens need to be protected from the foxes, because they WILL come back - they've found their Popeyes drive-through right in your backyard! I am sure with your experience, once you get your birds safe and well, you will be a big contributor here. Best wishes!

Here are a couple of articles that might help you with predator protection:

1. Predator Proofing new and existing coops

2. Electric Fences

3. Trouble in Parasites

To look for articles on your own:

A. Use the SEARCH button, but use the Advanced Search choice, and select ARTICLES at the top of the box. Just enter your keyword(s) and scroll through your results!

B. I find it helpful to notice the rating and reviews. All articles are by BYC members, and all the reviews/ratings are as well. The ratings help a newbie like me sort the most useful and reliable articles.

C. You can bookmark the articles or posts you think you want to refer to again using that bookmark icon at the top of articles or posts. You can find them again by clicking on your own avatar and looking at the list of bookmarks you have built up!

Welcome to BYC @LilaJean - settle in and enjoy our community.
My set-up is similar to @DobieLover - I have a spacious secure run that I can keep them confined in if I am not going to be home to lock up or there is a heavy snow. And then a much, much larger area that is enclosed in electric fence netting where they spend most days.
I have been working to add junk (easy) and shrubs to the fenced area to give them cover from aerial predators. That is a work in progress but enough that I let them out there all day and only confine them if I can’t be home for lock-up time.

Welcome. I agree with many here. Long story short, protecting your chickens by them being confined does not equal mites and worms. Likewise, free ranging does not keep them free from them. I cannot use electric fencing only because aerial predators are my biggest problem. Therefore, besides my chickens 18x12 coop, and 20x30 hardcovered and 1/2 inch hardware cloth with an apron run, they have a 40x60 foot space that has hardware cloth fencing and good bird netting on the top -high enough for me to walk under. It looks ridiculous, but it works.
