Northern Michigan Chickens

Hi texroo, I don't know about Alpena, but I know Posen has a ton of farms. You may find one there. Stop in the gas station there. They should know the town gossip!:-)

Possen, I'll be close to there this week end. Thank you for the suggestion..I'll do that...I'm actually in greenbush but most people know Alpena way before my neck of the woods.

My son runs the family dollar in posen, say hi to andrew for me :-)

We made our trip to Roger city but we were so far off schedule that the side trip to Posen was out of the question..I'll still stop in up there when and if I get the chance

Hello all. I know this topic has probably been exhausted but I need help. All of my chicks are about 5 weeks old Assorted breeds and I have one that I'm pretty sure is a roo and hes being picked on. I noticed last night when I was putting them in their coop for the night his tail feathers are missing and his bottom has dried blood where his feathers were. I'm not sure if they are getting board throughout the day as my run is temporary and not secure enough to leave them out all day while I'm at work. My permanent one will be delivered in a week maybe two at the most. My original plan was/is to Cull most of them in the fall so I built my coop with that in mind so I know its not nearly the size it needs to be. So here is my questions..... do I go find some free pallets and use some chicken wire to build a more secure run so they can stretch their wings throughout the day? ( i live in the woods and worry about fox and feral cats) And what do I do about my roo? I'm pretty sure its not a good idea to separate him from the girls. ...I know I rambled.....sorry. thanks in advance for any help.

You may want to repost this under a new topic forum to get expert advice. You posted this in the ongoing Northern Michigan thread. Go back up to the top and click on "Start a new thread". I am not sure but if your little one is being pecked you should separate him/her. I have heard that chickens will actually peck another one to death. My hens are not that vicious but I once bought some year old birds that were very mean and pecked the combs on other birds. I would definitely try to get them some space, even if it is temporary. It sounds like these are meat birds but you still want to have happy, healthy animals. Make sure they have enough food too. I live in the woods in Roscommon. A weasel got into my run and killed most of my flock one year. Now I let them fend for themselves during the day and lock them in their pen at night. Other than the weasel, we have had possum, racoon, skunks, cats and dogs but none of them killed any of the hens.

Thanks Louanne. I live north of you near Kalkaska. I spoke to my husband last night and the girls and my roo will have a better run by the end of the week.

Did you repost your question in the thread starter section? You will get a lot more, and better, information if you start a new thread. There are many things you can do to prevent the pecking of tail feathers. I am new to this. I have this is the second year I've had hens. I replaced the ones I lost with chicks from Family Farm Supply in Gaylord. The mean older hens that I bought from a lady in Mio bruised the beaks of the little ones. Hens are cute but they can be vicious. The ones I raised from chicks (Rhode Island Reds) are so docile and friendly. I just got some White Leghorns and they are flighty and tend to peck more. Good luck!
