Hi I'm Whimsical,
Or at least that's the name I'll use here. I'm a soon to be home owner that just bought a house in a small rural town. I'm a plant based mom trying to teach my seven year old sustainability. We eat a vegetarian plant based diet. We also do not eat eggs or milk. Noto get into too far into the politics but I've always wanted farm fresh cruelty free chickens and enjoy eggs again. I was absolutely heart broken to find that my rural (large agricultural) town actually doesn't allow chickens! Wait what?! So I dive deeper into the by-laws and ordinances of my municipality to find that you can have rabbits, you can even have pot bellied to micropigs but poultry is not allowed. So naturally I called the town to find the first person to answer said 'absolutely I couldn't see why not' but he forwarded me to a higher rankings city official to get a call back saying 'no, chickens are not pets and not allowed in that residential zone.' I was devastated. I'm just here to gather as much info as I can before I give up on this dream of having pet chickens in our new backyard.

Hi and welcome to BYC:frow I hope you win your battle, there's lots of info out here on how to fight the bureaucrats. Again, welcome and we're so glad you joined us:ya

Weird rules, a pot belly pig is not petite, they grow up to weigh enough to be a hazard rather than a house(?) pet. You may want to post on "Canadians- check in here." thread and see if others will rally round you in hopes of chickens being allowed. Hope you will be successful :fl

Drumstick I know I was absolutely stunned at that finding!! I'll look into the above mentioned post.

Here is a bit of my local by-laws...

Comprehensive Zoning By-law 2014-45
'AGRICULTURAL USE: general farming and without limiting the generality of the foregoing includes the raising and harvesting of field, bush, tree or vine crops, truck gardening, nurseries, greenhouses, dairying, animal husbandry, raising of poultry, and the sale of produce grown on the farm from which the sale is made. A farm residence for the owner of the farm and accommodation for employees engaged in the operation of the farm is permitted, except where specifically prohibited in the Agricultural Two (A2) Zone.'

Schedule A of The Exotic Pets ByLaw 2014/19
This ByLaw goes on to list the various animals considered 'exotic' that are banned which goes on to say...
Mamals Artiodactylus Ungulates (such as cattle, goats, sheep and pigs)
EXCEPT for potbellied pigs/mini pigs kept as pets.
This exception goes to say they are not considered exotic therefor are allowed in residential homes for 'pets' and are such treated as so.

Welcome to you!

Wow, I have just had chickens a very short time, but the personality I have seen in these wonderful birds make me wonder how they could not be considered to be a pet.

Even the city of Seattle allows chickens. Hens, but not roosters. Sounds like the community needs to consider an update to some rules... Perhaps you could gently initiate some change. Good Luck!
