Greetings from northern Virginia! I'm excited to find the BYC website. We have seven chickens that are now over 2 months old. I have Plymouth rock, RIRs, white leghorn and New Hampshire (although the NH look like buff orpington to me)

What do you feed your chickens? I give them rice, fresh vegetables and fish head. It's a lot of work chopping vegetables and fish head and I wonder if commercial chicken feeds are cheaper and easier.

Can someone please tell me with seven chickens, how many nesting boxes will I need?

3 nesting boxes would be plenty. You will find the girls usually want the same box and will line up to use it or even get on top of the present occupant and lay an egg on them. Chicks aren't rocket scientists and for good reason. It is fun to watch thought.

Thanks a lot. That must be fun to watch - get on top of another one and lay on her:) How about I make a real long box so they can be next to each other.

Hi chickenvillemom. It's nice to meet you here. I don't know anyone in person yet who raise chicken in VA.

Oh it's so good to see other fellow VA's getting chicken crazy! I'm in Charlottesville and I'm having a blast!
welcome!

Hi LuLuhwa -- nice to meet you too! I'm in Hanover County...outside of Richmond. You can check out the Virginia thread to meet more local folks. Glad you joined BYC!
