I am also from Hammond. I have one chicken that I found wondering around, now looking for a few more, maybe Silkies.
Be careful because chix are illegal in Hammond, so keep a low profile.
Tractor Supply in St John and Teds Feed in Lansing IL are good sources.
What kind and how many chickens are you getting?
