hello! Been reading backyard chickens for a few years and have found wonderful information for this city girl turned farm owner. I do need advice. Besides Craigslist and Pennswoods, where would you advertise day old chicks for sale? When you are selling eggs, do they have to be cold, from the fridge or can they be fresh from the coop? Lastly, I am searching for a Lavender Orpington Rooster for my beautiful Hens. One of which was to be a roo. Thanks!

Welcome to BYC!!
I think the answer on the egg sale protocol may have to be found in a legal document on private sales of animal byproducts?? Or... just follow what the industry does. Once an egg is washed it MUST be refrigerated since the natural protective layer has been taken off.
You might also want your layers to be vaccinated for salmonella to reduce possible illness, and probably even put up a sign somewhere- or on your cartons saying that ingestion of raw eggs increases risk of food-borne illness. Just to pad yourself.

We sold our eggs to family but there was also a time when we purchased eggs from a neighbor and they weren't washed. Often enough they weren't even cold, but sometimes he told us on the phone he would have to check the fridge. This was deep south Alabama though... most of us weren't aware of any laws to follow. *chagrined*

Oh, people intentionally move here? LOL.

Anyway, welcome to BYC!

As for where to advertise your chicks, I find the Area shopper and Free Press great options as it is cheap to advertise there but the local paper is also an option.

Also, most of the local feed mills around here still have old school bulletin boards where you can post adverts. Other local shops do as well. The less commercial the more chance I find them to have of having a bulletin board but that is not always the case.

Good luck!
