The Norwegian Jaerhon was originally bred to be winter hardy. A smallish and lightweight breed that lays a nice, large creamy white egg. Jaerhons are kind of rare in the US, but seem to be a very popular breed in their homeland.
I never get tired of looking at these beautiful, crele-colored birds. My pullets are curious, and friendly, often flying up to perch on my shoulder! The roo, Oslo, is gentlemanly and easy to work with. And they are mild-mannered with each other.
My young flock laid all winter long this year up here in the high Rockies. They have been "easy keepers" and thrifty/thriving with my whole grain, homemade feed. They also are exceptional free-rangers, with the ability to fly up and into trees, which is helpful with predator issues here on our forest farm. Their coloring tends to camoflauge them, as well.
My flock has been fertility tested this spring, with excellent results. Chicks are easy to color-sex at birth.
A recent BYCer's experience with my eggs:
"5 are out one is zipping and 4 more are pipped! It looks great. The 5 chicks (so far) are beauties. I can't remember how many you sent (ordered 12) , but of the 13 that made it to lockdown (and those were all moving) 10 are in some stage of hatching or hatched. Awesome odds, especially coming all the way to Alaska! If you want to use a quote from me regarding the quality of your eggs please feel free. Your eggs are terrific and people should know it."
"12 have hatched and the 13th has pipped and is starting to zip. That is 100% for all that made it past day 14 and into lockdown. Just super. This is mostly due to great eggs and excellent packaging without which we would not have had such luck. Thanks Rosemary for everything. It has been such fun, and you are right - they are very robust! Keep you posted on their progress!"
