my 4 y/o hen, layla (buff brahma) has dried blood on her nostril and often does. i think it’s from one of the other girls pecking her. i have 4 in this group and 2 are 10 and layla and the other are 4. i’ve had all of them since chicks and they didn’t used to have problems. i never see anyone pecking layla, but there’s a lot of time i’m not there and i think they’ve learned that i don’t put up with that when im there, so it makes sense if they’re going to peck, that they do it when i’m in the house, etc…
since it’s on her nostril, i am concerned about putting anything on it out of fear of blocking her air intake or having her inhale something like fumes or whatever. any ideas on how to help her heal and deter the others would be appreciated. i’m not sure if this is related, but layla had another sister that died a few months ago. they were inseparable, so idk if she’s really upset and the others are seeing that as a target.

It may be just pecking that caused the blood if she has no symptoms of a respiratory disease (sneezing, cough, head shaking, eye bubbles, gasping, crackly breathing, or mucus from the nostril. You can clean it off with a QTips, saline, or a few drops of hydrogen peroxide.

i think so. any ideas on how to keep the others from doing it?

Chickens are drawn to red things, so the pecking and blood becomes a vicious cycle. You can buy purple antiseptic creams and ointments that are designed to hide the red and deter this - I’ve never tried it myself but they seem to be popular.

You could probably DIY it with a tub of Sudacrem and some purple food dye!
