Hi all. I have a young rooster that has a smelly thick discharge coming from one nostril. Still eating and drinking normally, still very active.
Before I head to the vet is there anything you would suggest for home care?
Thanks

Welcome To BYC!
Can you post some photos of him and the inside of his beak?
How old is he?
How long have you had him?
Where are you located in the world?

Look inside his beak for any lesions or yellow/white pasty material, check his crop to make sure it's emptying overnight and take time to note if he's wheezing, has facial swelling, sneezing and/or bubbles or pus in the eye.

A smelly discharge can be from a number of things from canker, having something stuck in the choanal slit to respiratory disease - getting a better idea of what is causing it will help determine treatment.

Hi!
Thanks for replying.
I am just south of Nashville Tennessee.
He’s a young blue copper Marans rooster about six months old. I hatched him this spring. No sneezing or wheezing. Crop feels normal, still very active, eating well, very friendly as well. No changes in behavior. No swelling on the face nothing showing in the eyes. It’s just a little bit of goo coming out of one sinus.
I’ll get pictures later today.

Nothing looks abnormal in the mouth. It does seem to be getting better.

Thank you. What would you recommend to use in this case. I wonder if I should have some antibiotics on hand.

Not sure what you could or should use if he's getting better on his own. He has no symptoms besides a bit of goo coming out of one nostril. Hard to know what's causing it without other symptoms and what/how you would treat.

Respiratory infection like Mycoplasma is commonly treated with Tylosin.
Infectious Coryza you would use a sulfa antibiotic.
Canker is treated with an anti-protozoal.
Viral infections have to run their course.
Fungal or yeast infections would require anti-fungal/yeast medications.
And the list would go on...

Thank you.
I take my birds to vet whenever necessary and I’ve done a lot of reading but still feel unprepared for every eventuality. I guess because they hide their symptoms so effectively.
Thanks for your help.
