Welcome to the forum - your first several paragraphs sound just like my husband and I. We consider ourselves 'homesteaders', have nearly three acres in the N. GA Mtns. of Georgia and began raising heritage breed barred rocks
then the 'addiction' associated with chicken keeping kicked in - at least for me - my husband 'tolerates' it and built me
a fantastic chicken house and huge covered protected run with reclaimed windows, doors, wood - most from buildings and barns he took down made of 100 y.o. plus wood. I broke my foot a few weeks ago ( like an idiot I didn't have my usual
chicken poo worthy shoes on but sandles ) lost my balance in one of the pens, twisted oddly and now in cast up to my
knee and poor DH is having to tend twice daily to my flock of 60 chickens! I have Plymouth Barred Rocks, Welsummers and Easter Eggers. Just sold off my previous BR layers a few weeks ago ( I hatch out eggs from my chickens and raise them to replace the older layers every year since I sell eggs locally and need high rate of lay from my 'girls' ).
Unfortunately math is not my strong suit and I miscalculated the 'birth' date of my younger 'girls' and Roos so I've been
'eggless' now for about a month - first time in several years! I keep asking my DH after he comes in from feeding them
'are their combs brigh red yet?' but he says he 'dosen't inspect them - just makes sure they have clean water and plenty
of food and cks the nests for eggs daily and so far zero.
Your idea sounds wonderful about the endangered poultry. Please make sure you have many different pens available
as you will soon find you NEVER HAVE ENOUGH - especially if you are attempting to selectively breed different
breeds. Hope you post often. 'Forced' retirement for many of us was just one door closing and another much better
one opening - let's hope that is the case for you! Take care and keep us posted on the progress on your great plan!
