: (I'm looking to buy my first birds and I had my heart set on Buff Orpingtons. I mentioned it to my local feed store owner today and he said they are not good layers, but great for meat. I'm going to raise chickens for the eggs, and I live in Florida. Is this not the bird for me?

BOs are dual purpose breeds. They wont lay as many as sex links but they will lay pretty good and if you want to eat them you can do that to.

i'd say BO's are the best besides sexlinks

Good is a relative term. Buff O's are a dual-purpose breed meaning they lay fairly well and get big enough to be worth eating. You won't get as many eggs as you would from a White Leghorn or a sex-link, but a lot more than from many breeds that were developed just for their fancy points. As a general-purpose chicken I think they're great.
