Over the month of May, I was gifted three beautiful hens from two different sources: a French Cuckoo Marans that was at the bottom of the pecking order in her previous flock, one Buff and one Blue Orpington, both traumatized by predator attacks that only left the two of them alive. Before the new additions, I had what I considered the perfect flock for me: six golden sex links. They were all laying and all getting along. We had our routine down pat between safe foraging, fermented and dry feed, and a light snack at the end of the day.
Truth be told, however, I did want to add some color in the ways of feathers and eggs. With the addition of these lovely hens, my feather wish came true. Now, though, our routine is in shambles as we navigate quarantine and social protocol. I write this today, because today is the day I plan to have everyone forage together. In a couple of days, I will allow them to sleep together. Fingers crossed that all goes well. Thus far, Pepper (the Marans) will not sleep in the coop. She perches in the run, which leads me to my next point.
Today is also the day that my husband and I decide exactly how to add on to our run area. I surely do not want it to look like an afterthought, but that is where we will be heading if we cannot come up with a visually appealing solution. We must fortify the run for all the girls, which includes Pepper and her desire to sleep outside the coop, and we must add square footage. One of these days, I will get some pictures up of our setup.
