the edge of insanity
I have a buff orpington, who is broody. She has been 'on' eggs now for about 2 weeks. She is not a dominate hen here though. In reality, all the hens are taking time laying on the eggs, but she is the one who is on them if no one else is. She is on them all night, and evenings but during the daytime, when the other hens are interested in laying eggs, she is in a nearby nest waiting. Am I being silly in expecting her to protect her young? She won't let me near her. I do not have very friendly hens.

Am I just in a wait and see situation? I'm just getting a little anxious about this. I look forward to some chicks (3 eggs seem to be viable) around here.

Update: Now a black australorp is broody and sitting on the original nest while the buff is on freshly laid eggs. Less than one week and we should have 3 chicks.
