Okay so this is where our chickens stay constantly unless we let them out to roam the field. As you can see it's very open, not enclosed like a lot of store bought coops. It is REALLY windy and cold tonight (22 f)....do you think our chickens will be okay? I'm really nervous they're going to freeze and feel so bad for them:(

Why not hang some old blankets, feed sacks, plastic over the holes or for sure some to stop some of the wind. I would worry about it being that open----wind chill can be ruff. Anything---a $4/$5 tarp from some where close. A couple sheets of plywood, some free pallets lent up on the sides/back.

We have enclosed the parts without fencing, and it is now all enclosed where I don't think anything can get in. We've had our chickens in there for about 2 months now and nothing has gotten them yet! (hopefully it stays that way)

We were able to put up another better quality tarp so hopefully they'll be okay!

Just make sure they are extra protected at night---No holes, no weak cheap fencing. Lost of predators Love Chicken. A not secure chicken pen is like walking on thin ice----it will "get" you when you least expect it. A stray dog will wipe you out in minutes if he can get to them. Other predators will get you---1 or 2 or a few at the time.

Cold temps are usually not that big of a problem. They just need to be out of direct wind, so using something to block out the wind would be a good idea. If your temps are like ours in NC right now, 19F with wind gusts at 40mph, they need to be able to get out of wind if they have mind to.

Mine are roaming their pen, but when they hear a gust coming - they scurry for a more protected area
