I couldnt find a "bedding" thread lol so if a mod does cath this they can move it to the correct cat if they so wish im fine with that :D

Anywho on with my lil rant, so i got the idea the other day after looking at all the newspaper and magizines everyone recycles and thought hey what if i shredd them up and use them for beeding in my chicken boxs....

So away i went with my lil home shredding machine shredding away. I got a pretty good system but i does take a long time to fill a 55 gal outdoor lawn bag by the time i remove all the staples and feed them through.

Just wondering what all your thoughts are on this? the only issue i have had is the paper shreddings stick to the eggs but its not much to get them off. OH and my paper shredder cross cuts them so there only like an inch to inch and half long not the long stringy shreddings

A side note i went as far as bedding my four cows with it and to more my suprise they would rather eat the paper then lay on it.... odd? id say so but it dont seem to bother them so if they want to eat it, then by all means have a blast lol thoughts and concerns on this? i would ask on Backyardherds.com but for some odd ass reason i cant get an email conformation and i even went as far as clicking on the link on the very bottom saying contact us and still have got nothing in return.....

I would be concerned about all the chemicals used in the paper industry, especially with the magazines and shiny paper colored inks. Cows in particular. I know that ruminants can digest a lot of roughage. But... it would not be my choice.

I use shredded junk mail and bills to line my nesting boxes.
I do not shred anything with a shine or metallic like ink.
I regularly have to add more as it just seems to disappear.
The birds WILL eat the paper.
Has not been a health issue for me in over a decade of using this as nesting material.

Not my choice either. Definitely not the shiny or colored paper and inks, but I'd also not use the regular newsprint. If they eat it, something will be absorbed by fat, and especially egg yolks. Printed paper isn't meant to be eaten, by anyone.
