I have them in a fairly big pen for 21 chickens no free range we have 2-3 four year old chickens rest are 2 or 3 when stop laying we have them as pets we don't feed corn because we have them on a non GMO non SOY diet
Most chickens will naturally slow down in winter because of less than 12 hours of light which seems to be the minimum light requirement. Also a few of mine are still molting, and of course don't lay for 1-2 months during a molt. You can add a light in the coop for a couple of hours, say 5-8 AM, and maybe increase your egg production--some do it, some prefer to let them have a vacation.
