Not laying in nesting box

Is it common for birds to not lay in the nesting box? Ours just started laying, but plops them right on the floor of the coop. And 2 of 4 have been trampled/smashed by the other birds.

I use pine bedding currently. Is my bedding too rough/uncomfortable for them?

Maybe try making it look more inviting? I would try getting nesting boxes and putting one or two fake eggs in there.

I do have nesting boxes. Just can't see them in the pic.

I may try the fake eggs or I've heard of golf balls working too?!

Anything sort of roundish will generally work. Lol. Although some seem to be smarter than others about it, most of them seem to be easy to trick. I used an old EOS lip gloss container that was bright red and my girls (ducks) went right on in and laid in the box from the start.
