Not pure Barred Rock?

I called the hatchery that southern states got them from and sent an email with pics at their rquest. They called me a few hours later and told me thet are not br's, they are Commercial Blacks. They said they are bred for egg laying and lay 350 to 400 eggs per year and that they are mixed from a bunch of different breeds. They said they must have gotten mixed in withthe barred rock shipment by mistake.

That's not a good sign then. The only thing that I can think that they are referring to are Black SLs. They are high egg production hybrids, and can be gender IDed at birth. Unfortunately the males are the ones with the bars, where the females are pure black.

they were probably referring to Production Blacks, which are white egg layers with barred feathers.

Mt Healthy hatchery sells "commercial blacks", which by their own admission and photos can be about anything mixed together. LOL

I actually spoke to the owner of the hatchery this morning. This is what he had to tell me about them.

They are layers of brown eggs. They are bred from commercial stock (dunno what that means). They have different kinds of breeds in them...more than two. He elaborated at my request...it means that as an example...the mama hen could be half RIR and half BR, while the father could be half Americauna and half NHR (just as an example)...therefore mine could be 1/4 of each. The are NOT red sex linked. The barring of the feathers does not qualify them as males. Females can be barred as well. They are bred to get high egg production...350 to 450 eggs per year. They have the same temperament as the Barred Rock.

Not unless he made a typo of his mouth LOL. That's what he told me on the phone, unless I misunderstood him. I could have about the 450...I know he said four hundred something, I thought he said four hundred fifty. I know for SURE he said 350.

Black Rock (exclusive to Scotland Hatchery and is even Copyrighted and trademarked (a special Grandparent Line of RIR and BR Crossing)
the red breast is a leakage that has become synonymous to the Rocks and is now a recognised trait




Then you have the a Cuckoo Marans X RIR




then the Bluebell FC Marans X RIR



and the silver sussex

light sussex (Columbian) X BPR





There are a few others I cant remeber

No, you misunderstood my post (or didn't read it, no offense). They are not hybrids like these above. They are mixes OF the hybrids. In other words, each chick has more than 2 breeds in them. As an example, it's like my chick's mom was your cuckoo maran crossed with the RIR and the dad was your Black Rock. Or the mom was a BR crossed with a NH and the dad was a RIR crossed with an Auracana.

Yea, or hybrid crossing a purebred too I would guess...like a red sex link mixed with a barred rock, etc. etc. It sucks kinda that I don't know what mine are mixed with...and the fact that there is no way to sex I.D. them until they are either crowing or laying eggs.
