My pet chicken lets you buy a minimum of 3 chickens. Also TSC has days when you can buy a few chicks (my mom only wanted a few from TSC but in Vermont the min. order is 6

) My pet chicken has Australope.

My Pet Chicken won't have them until the end of next month. I want them nowwwwwww! I don't see them on TSC. Do I just have to call them? How would I know when they were letting people order just a few?

Thanks everyone for all of the wonderful advice! This citified farming is so different from what I know. (But I have a much better husband this time around! *g*)

Michael's Chick :

Ok, so I've had chickens before but my situation is much different now. Before I had 6 free-range Buff Orpingtons on 2.5 acres. Now I'm considering 2 or 3 chickens on a large suburban lot. Before, my chickens got eaten by coyotes and cougars. Now... cats? Raccoons?

So now for my questions.

1. Our backyard is totally fenced by a 5' wood fence. If I free range my chickens will they be able to get over the fence into the neighbors yards with the mean dogs?

I have a fence lower than that and it has kept bigger birds in. I have a smaller hen who either finds a way to get under or may even be flying over when I'm not looking. If you get one of the big breeds you should be okay.

2. Can I have 2 chickens, or would 3 be better?

I currently only have two. They do fine. I'm about to add 3 roosters and 11 pullets. They aren't going to like me anymore!

4. Are there any real simple but attractive designs for coops/runs for 2 or 3 chickens? I could build something more complex but I have to build it fast if I want to get spring chicks this year.

Have you checked out the threads here? There are lots of awesome coops on here!!

5. I need to get into this for the lowest possible cost. I remember the feeders (chick and chicken) and waterer I will need, but I don't recall if we put a heat lamp or just a light in the roost?

I have neither.

6. Is there anything I might be forgetting?

Probably! Sorry, just kidding. But I went out to get fencing, a waterer and came home to realize I needed pine shavings too, so I'm the wrong person to answer that question...

Good luck!
