Not sure I am feeding them enough...they seem to always be hungry!

I have 7 4-month old chicks. They are outside in their coop and run during the day, locked up at night. Their run is 12x6. I keep their food and water in their coop so they can get it throughout the day.

They, of course, have eaten every single piece of grass in the run so it is mostly sand/dirt. Whenever I go out there, they always seem to be begging for treats and seem hungry even though they have food in their feeder. I often out a huge clump of dirt/grass in there for them to pick through and will also toss in a pile of wet leaves. They jump on both of them like they are starving.

Am I not feeding them enough? I do give cracked corn at night. I also feed them a head of lettuce or ears of corn but not all the time. Is this just regular chicken behavior? (This is my first time raising chickens). I'm trying to figure out a way to get them some time in other parts of the yard so they have fresh grass but I can't have them be free range because of other animals and the proximity to a busy road.

Any suggestions would be welcome!

Thank you!

I think this is just regular behavior... my ladies do the same thing, and they are now a year old. Even if they have plenty of food, they "beg" for treats when they see you. One of the great things about it is if I want to get them back into their run... I just have to shake an empty food bucket and they will come running fast!

Thanks. I was worried that they weren't getting enough worms or grass or were bored. I'm not always home during the day to watch them so find it a little hard to always get out there to bring treats. I do go out there as soon as I get home to interact with them but again, they always seem hungry.

I did buy and hang one of those treat cones from TSC but they haven't even touched it. Darn picky chickens! :)

As long as they have food in the feeder, you're feeding them enough. If they think you going to give them something special, whether it's a handful of cracked corn or a bucket of dirt, they will mob you. Typical chicken behavior.

Thanks! I was worried that they weren't eating enough. I've not sure how to tell if a chicken is overweight or not. :) Mine are still fairly young so I think they are okay. Thanks for all the help!

In fifty years of raising chickens I can say they are just like having teenagers around and just always looking for something to eat as they do not have a X-Box or Nintendo ...
My teen has a game system but he also eats everything in the house! I'm about ready to stop buying milk because he can drink a gallon a day.

My chickens are always hungry too. I don't think they ever stop pecking around for food. I'm pretty sure that's just what they do. There are not alot of options for activities for chickens.

Wow do I know that on I bought 3 gallons Friday after picking them up from school and down to a half gallon already if we had grass here I would have bough-ten a cow a long time ago but I am sure they would not like getting up to milk old Betsy .....

I find if there is some feed in the feeder the chickens stay in the yard more as a 6 foot fence is not much to fly over for them ...

Normal chicken behavior. They run down and grab whatever is put out, even if they don't know what it is or don't really want it. They take it, run off and if they get away from others, check it out to see if they really want to eat it. They just want to be sure to get their fair share ALL OF THE TIME! I give a hand full of sunflower seeds about the same time every day and they make sure they are in the area so they don't lose out. I also took a suet feeder (square metal thing) and stuff it full of leaves (lettuce, kale, cabbage.....) and they really enjoy playing with it as they eat. Enjoy!
