Henlo all!
I was slowly putting antibiotics drops, at most maybe 2-3 drops, on the side of the buff orpington's beak (closer to the front) via syringe for her prolapsed vent and waiting for her to drink it. At one point, she started to open her mouth a little to breathe, she did this for no more than maybe 15 seconds, but a slow open mouth breathing. I didn't hear anything gaspy or rattling...just opening and closing of the beak. Could she have been just stressed? This never happened during the other 5 days I've been giving her meds...
She settled down again and I was able to give her the rest of the dosage quite slowly again. She ate and drank normally after. She seemed okay throughout the night, and this morning I was able to give her her last dose. I didn't hear anything from her breathing and didn't hear any rattling or clicking. She ate a bit of apple this morning and I think maybe pecked at some food?
I did have to put her in a different crate because after I put her to bed last night, she was pecking at another chicken (possibly out of boredom). I'm currently rehabbing 2 of them in an apt so not ideal but I was the only one who could take them both. I have music, a mirror, and stabbed some apples on a stick to help with some enrichment. I'm trying my best with what I have...or don't have. Also, I'm going to be returning her back to the farm I volunteer at tomorrow morning.
Would it be very obvious even if a tiny bit of antibiotics went down the wrong pipe? When should I be worried or what signs do I need to look out for? I'm just a little worried since she's a bit sleepier or maybe a bit more lethargic than usual..? Do chickens sleep if they're bored?
