My husband brought them home from a rancher, but he didn't ask the breed. Also, the guy said the chicks are the hen's, but some are yellow and some are all black. Is that normal to have different colored chicks from one hen? I have no clue since these are our first chickens. Thanks for the help! Sorry, the pic isn't great...took it through the makeshift shelter for them right now.

Definitly looks like an OEGB to me as well, as for what kind.. not sure. I think a Blue Wheaten or something like that, although I think the tip of their tails are darker. She is a beauty tho! :)

I just answered another question about an OEG rooster that I THINK is the same, and it looks as though you've got a Red Pyle OEGB

Yes, a hen can hatch different colored chicks. Especially if there was more than one rooster around! But just like my husband and I have a blonde and a brunette, that hen and one roo could have different colored chicks. That's more common if one parent is a mixed breed, or if the parents are different breeds or colors. Plus, a hen will happily set on another hen's eggs, hatch them and raise them as their own. A lady close to me uses bantam hens to raise peacocks!

Your hen looks like some type of game hen. They're known for being very self suffecient, decent layers, great mothers. They forage for food well if you plan to free range them.

Thanks for the responses! So, the chicks could be Red Pyle's or some other type as well?
