I have a 6 week old Araucana that the dog went after - my husband accidentally let him out of the house when I had the chickens in the backyard and he got poor Stella in his mouth for maybe a second or two. I instantly brought her inside because she looked terrified. After a bit she jumped out of the box and was limping around. I thought she was ok so I put her in the coop for the night. I checked on her and she was on the roosting bar w/the other chickens, but this morning she was limping around and just sat in the corner - didn't eat or drink.

So I brought her inside and she ate some food, next thing I know she jumped out of the box and was hobbling around. When I put her back in the box, she just wants to sit. I looked at her leg and it doesn't look broken, but I have no idea what is wrong (other than the dog experience was traumatic). Does anyone have any suggestions for me? Or thoughts on something else that may be wrong? All I could find was her hip may be injured, but she walks ok when when wants to....otherwise pulls her leg up or sits on the ground. Thank you!

Welcome to BYC. You should probably cage her for a week or so to rest the leg. Look carefully at it for swelling, bruising, or displacement of the bones. Splinting can be done for a break if the bone is aligned properly, but a sprain should heal in a couple of weeks. Put her food and water in the cage, add a B complex tablet dissolved in her water every day, and place her cage in the coop or run with the others so she still is a member of the flock. She may need to be caged for a couple of weeks.

Thank you - I looked thoroughly for a break or any bleeding from the dog but don't see anything. Her wings are ok too. I'll take your suggestions! Are the chicks young enough at 6/7 weeks that this won't make her an outcast?
