So, i'm back down to 24 (soon to be 23) chickens in the coop, with 7 cockerels in the grow out pen. This is after accidental letting chicken math get the best of me early this summer and having over 50 chickens total for a short while.

This morning (before prepping to dispatch some of the cockerels) my husband tells me I can start hatching some more eggs soon if I want. Then while at tractor supply he says I can get a few of I want. I told him I didn't think we had space to buy and hatch chicks right now.

I'd love a few more chicks and do hope to start the incubator soon, but come on. The kids want to keep a second rooster (one off the cockerels) and I'll have to build a coop for him if we do so. Plus I needed to reinforce the current coop and build a new goat pen...

Well if he wants to get out there and put his carpentry skills to work....
In all honestly though, there is such a thing as to much of a good thing. The chores, cleaning out the coop, rinsing and cleaning of the waterer and feed dishes, changing the nest material, doctoring the sick amd injured, culling the troublemakers, ever learning the new ways preditors will eat your birds and figuring out what to do about it, keeping them occupied in the winter when they cant get outside, . It goes on and on.
I have a good comfortable balance with 12 chickens, just the right amount of work for the right ammount of enjoyment and eggs.
you just have to find YOUR comfortable balance!

Well fortunately i'm a stay a home mom with 3 kids in school. But your right there is a balance agreed we are suppose to be prepping for a horse. Not that I want or need a horse they are really just expensive pets, but it's a favor for a friend.
