Homemade Laundry Detergent
I got this recipe online when I was looking for ways to save money.
4 cups of water.
• 1/3 bar of cheap soap, grated.
• 1/2 cup washing soda (not baking soda).
• 1/2 cup of Borax (20 Mule Team).
• 5-gallon bucket for mixing.
• 3 gallons of water.
First, mix the grated soap in a saucepan with 4 cups of water, and heat on low until the soap is completely dissolved. Add hot water/soap mixture to 3 gallons of water in the 5-gallon bucket, stir in the washing soda and Borax, continue stirring until thickened. Let the mix sit for 24 hours. It'll thicken some, kind of globby like, but you can use it just like that or you can stir the mixture before using it.

I use a cupful per load and love it. I don't think it's good for front loaders though.

I also make homemade baby wipes, baby wipes solution and dishwashing detergent...we don't have a dishwasher so I don't know if there's a recipe for dishwashers.

I'd love to hear of any other homemade recipes for things we use around the house.

Forget about buying copper cleaner - you can use ketchup & salt or half a lemon & salt to scrub the copper clean.

White vinegar - about a cup in a bucket of hot water - will clean & shine wood floors.

Honey is an excellent facial - it has antibacterial properties and is soothing (if messy).
Spread honey over your face, let sit for 5 minutes then rinse off with warm water & blot dry.

That's all I can recall now - may post more later as the Old Lady Memory fires up...

OH! I use that! It works great!

My husband likes the smell and it saves us so much money! We have a nursery and dirt is our friend, so we wear a lot of it and go through a lot of laundry detergent!
I have to make more today. I do not make the liquid, I use it as a dry detergent. I fill the tub with hot water and let it soak for about an hour. I was going to try to make the liquid today. The liquid may not need the soaking time...but we get really dirty, so I probably still will.
I use the Felsnampha (spell?) because the family likes the smell (

-I don't)

Oh, would you mind posting your dish washing detergent recipe too?
For dish washers, I think it was a tbsp of washing soda and a tbsp of borax in the little soap thing-ie.
I have not tried that yet.
I have made a lot of changes trying to conserve money and i think I will stick with them even after this recession lifts. The older ways weren't really bad or all that inconvenient. I think we got caught up in the advertising. We did what mom did, when we should have been looking closer at what grandma was doing.

Here's my recipe for the homemade hand dishwashing soap I use at home:
I use 2 cups of castile soap, a few drops of any essential oil you like..my favorite essential oils are lavender for clothes detergent and lemon for hand dishwashing soap...and 1/2 a cup of warm water.

Mix the two cups of castile soap with a 1/2 cup of warm water. Add the essential oil you like if that's what you want to do (you don't have to) Mix everything well and just place it in an empty squeeze bottle - A little goes a long way and shake it up before you use it.

@ 3goodeggs - I love that Fels soap...I got them everywhere!! I love the smell it leaves on the clothes, especially if you hang dry!

@2dogsfarm - I did the facial you posted with honey! oooooh, it was sticky but after you wash it off, it felt great, thank you for posting that!!

My two favorite Baby wipes formulas - We got only one kiddo left in pull ups (she's 2) but I think with kids, it never hurts to keep wipes around. I always have a small ziplock bag with about 10 wipes when ever we go out...because with kids, you never know...there's always a face, hands or rear to clean!

Soapless baby wipe solution
2 drops tea tree oil
2 drops lavender oil
1 cup warm water

or

Basic baby wipe solution
1/2 cup of baby oil
1/2 cup baby wash
2 cups of warm water
you can add a drop of any essential oil you like or not

Mix together - get a container with lid, the size baby wipes come in, place a few baby wash cloths in the container and pour the mixture over the wash cloths or if you're looking for use and toss - get a roll of bounty or viva towels (get the strong paper towels-the bounty that comes now with different tear off sizes are great!) cut the roll in half, remove the cardboard in the middle, put the cut paper towels in a size appropriate container and pour the mixture over the paper towels. If you're creative enough, you can cut a small slit in the lid of your container and just pop out the wipes as you need them...if not, you can just tear off the sheets individually and lay them flat in the wipes container and pour the mixture over the sheets....

for the baby wipes, I cut the paper towel roll in half , pour the solution inside the cardboard tube then pull the tube out and up pops your first wipe, they feed form the inside very well.
